As Jaco mentioned, PRS NZ has started back up again under Anthony. It looks like there will be at least three PRS events in the North Island and three in the South in 2024.
Follw them and see...
With typical steel targets it is velocity that kills steel.
Steel targets are typically specified based upon impact velocity and impact energy.
Impact velocities vs steel hardness
Mild steel is...
Yep, though it has been a few years ago now.
Apply for and get your ATF documents / permits.
make sure you have what you need to bring the rifle back into NZ.
Pick it up when you get there and...
I am fairly sure the Police are not subject to the current range certification regime... neither are Defense Force. I don't know how it works in practice with Police using civilian ranges and how...
The main two technical guys in the range design/safety area at FSA are very experienced with military ranges and have great experience with backstop materials and the problems and benefits associated...
I think the FSA (now) Range Manual has flip-flopped on the earth filled tyres thing. I think there was a bit in the manual about they were worries about low velocity projectiles basically "bouncing"...
The range I provided some small advice to sounded like it was in a quarry? So might be a different range we are talking about grandpamac
I am not personally involved in this range at all outside of a conversation I had ages ago about suitable backstops for "large" projectile capture, suitable backstop depths, angled steel deflector...
The Taihape NZDA have a couple of ranges:
A static 100m range with paper targets;
The long range goes out to ~1100m with steel targets but also includes paper target frames at 200m, 300m, and...
Still a few people shooting rimfire silhouette at Tokoroa. Tokoroa has a centerfire pistol silhouette range as well.
I am not far away from going down the rimfire tuner "rabbit hole" myself. Got a suppressor / tuner on the way.
Some good advice in this thread and follows my own thoughts - find an ammunition with...
Sorry Tankd we'll have to agree to disagree on a couple of things here.
Again Section 17(1) and 17(2) of the Act is clear that volunteer organisations are not a PCBU. This is also clearly...
The Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 is pretty clear on this - a volunteer association is not a PCBU.
Yep, GPRE are essentially doing the same thing. Not so easy given we operate over several locations and don't have a centralised club structure. But we have got (and are still getting) a whole bunch...
2 years I have been working with Police (now Firearms Safety Authority) and we have only got this system across the line a couple of months ago - didn't leave a lot of time before the 24th of June. ...
This system was set up by the match directors who are mainly doing practical rifle competitions, long range shooting on farms, "PRS" style events, etc. and so its focus was toward common calibers...
Thanks Tentman, some good questions - I mentioned I would leave a bunch of stuff out.
Your first question - energy doesn't necessarily translate well to the "how far will a projectile travel"...
Field Ranges in NZ - Reduced Danger Area Example
The intent of this post is to demonstrate there is a Reduced Danger Area system that can be used under the NZ Firearms Safety Authority range...
All good Barry,
Probably worth reading Section 1.4 of that FSA Range manual to get their definition of sighting in as well.
Not going to argue with you Grandpamac - not my land, not my...
yep, that's the range i was thinking of and definitely a range hence the "head to the DoC office to get a permit" and get recorded as an Officer on Duty for that range and hence be allowed to use it....
The first portion of that is reasonable - once you have pernament targets or shooting mounds then FSA will say range - get certification. Same with occasional use versus regular use though FSA have...
That is not a range requiring certification under the NZ Police Firearms Safety Authority interpretation of the Act and Regulations. FSA would refer you to the recommendations made in Section 8 of...
If that is the range I am thinking of then that one has been used as a bit of a test case between NZDA, DoC, and the Police Firearms Safety Authority around certification of ranges located on...
Nice.
I would recommend is you round out the corners on the mickey mouse ears - sharp corners = crack initiation given the repeated impacts the targets are subject to.
A bit personal preference...
