1:7" twist 308 Who's running a ultra fast twist, super sonic and why ?

So who's running a 300 Blackout barrel in their 308 Winchester at full noise and why ?
More interested in your super sonic experiences
Subs are easy and the twist will be perfect

Serious question for a real project

Have a 16 inch 1-8 Tikka 308. Shoots subs good. Currently shooting 168ELD-Ms. Not terribly fast out of 16 inch barrel though 2500fps springs to mind.

STD 308 twist handles 190g subs and up to 208 amax/eldm

    Can confirm.

    standard 1:11 tikka 308 puts 190gr sub-x into sub-moa groups.

Have not tried anything heavier though.

I just know where a brand new SS semi finished 300 Blackout barrel blank is and it got me thinking if it would make a versatile 308 Win

Got a Bergara BA13 16” 1:8 308. Haven’t found anything it doesn’t shoot well with apart from 110gr projectiles. 110’s haven’t grouped that well but will keep experimenting. Got it to run subs with red dot sight but have shot about 90 animals with 150-165gr supers. Bit of a flamethrower though. Looks spectacular at night, especially without suppressor. Very user unfriendly without suppressor.

Not 8208, don’t have any and not fucking around trying to find any. Have used 2206h and 2219. 2219 goes alright but I tend to reserve that for 223. Back to reloading for that because of lack of Belmont ammo and not paying guncity or H&F prices for ammo unless I have to. The flamethrower effect is mostly with bought ammo.

The industry trend has been towards tighter and tighter twists, 1:7-8 are probably the most common these days is cartridges from 2600-3200fps.
308 seems to be one of the few cartridges that still comes standard in a slower twist but looking around the a few 1:8 twist barrels popping up.

If you go for a shorter barrel length I don't think 1:7 twist will be an issue with 308.
Especially considering 300 Norma is more or less standardized on a 1:8 twist.

If you don't end up buying the blank I'd be interested in it.
Been thinking of doing a 300blk Tikka build for a few years now.

had a similar idea once. After looking into it further I realized 308 can do everything a 300blk can do, and much more and a tikka bolt-action would not benefit from the shorter cartridge.

a mini-action on the other hand...

Not 30cal, but a 1:7" twist 22-250ai. Shoots everything from 50gr VMax up to 88gr ELD-M extremely well.

Also had one of the 1:8" twist Bergara 308's. It had a definite preference for heavier bullets. The best being the 208gr ELD-M but the recoil being a bit brutal. Settled on NBT's.

Also had a 1:7" twist Mini in 300blk briefly. Shot an assortment of loads from 110gr up to 220gr perfectly well.

I think the thing about having to match twist rate to bullet length/weight is overblown. It matters less and less with a decent barrel and decent bullets.

I think once twist gets fast and velocity is added...you end up needing stouter pill to handle the Gforces trying to tear the wee thing apart.... swings n roundabouts.

    Greetings @akaroa1,
My son has a Kaimai multi purpose rifle with a 7 inch twist 18 inch barrel which is loaded with full power 165 grain projectile loads for hunting plus there are subsonic and light loads. All shoot well although not to the same place. The 8 inch twist is becoming the default twist for a lot of 30 calibre and below rifles due to the high BC projectiles that have become available over recent years. Using a fast twist in the .308 provides a level of future proofing.
A glaring example of a failure in this respect sits in my gun safe. In 2004 I decided that my old ex police Brno .223 needed upgrading. At the time I was doing a lot of 4P target shooting and my eye came to rest on a Remington VSSF II in .223. This would fit in nicely with my Sendero in 7mmSAUM. The only problem was the 1 in 12 twist. Ruger offered a semi target rifle with IIRC a 9 inch twist but I really liked the Remington so bought that. Fast forward 20 years an 4P has been replaced by F Class. All manner of high BC .22 projectile have appeared, none of which will stabilise in a 12 twist. It does shoot the 60 grain VMax well which will have to do at 300 yards. After all I participate rather than compete.
    Regards Grandpamac.
