    200gr ELD-X for 30-06

Not have anything else better to do, I thought I would see if I can work up a good load using Hornadys 200gr ELD-X in my trusty old Mauser 98, 30-06.

I realise that there are better pills more suited for the 30-06, but as I happen to have a box of 200gr projectiles, some spare brass and a number of ADI powders I thought I'd see if I could stretch the legs my old rifle.

    Mauser 98, 1:10 twist, 22" barrel.

Anyone out there used the 200gr ELD-X in a 30-06? If so, then what worked?

    Cheers.

Used 53gr 2209 with 208 amax before, was getting warm in my rifle though (springfield 03-A3 factory sporter)
No idea how fast it was going. Recoil was intense..

You would have had to run ahead of the bullet with a broom clearing a path for it like in curling wouldn't you?

Sheesh!! I bet it was booting like a b@stard.. that a fair way over ADI max..

Am tossing up between trying 2209, 2213SC or H414. Probably get about 2500ft/s on a 22" barrel.

I just looked at adi data, their max is 52.4gr 2209 so only half a grain over, they're usually pretty conservative with max loads

I doubt it was screaming along to any degree, didnt have the rifle very long, bought it out of curiosity, didn't do anything 270 couldn't do, lovely rifle and a solid action though.

Yes , and i've been thinking about that as well, mine has a 22 inch barrel to .BDL .
Just don't know if it would be worth mucking about with
They would go well in a 308 Norma magnum I reckon.

Agree, but going to give it a go. Will start with 2209 and see how it goes. Might try 2213SC after that.

big n soft going slow will kill just fine.....if you think about it thats what they all had not that long ago. 200-220 grn big fat soft round nose was the go when 200 yards and over was a long shot. no one ever said the .303 brit wasnt enough gun for deer back when it used that sort of loading..... bet it will be a real hammer of thor when it hits.

Thanks guys for the advice. I have loaded a spread from 51.5 to 54gr of 2209. Weather dependant will fire and chrono them tomorrow.

Was thinking of trying that bullet in my 30 06 as well. Hornady 10th edition lists the velocity with Superformance powder around the 2650fps. Should be a very good load with a bit of recoil I would think.
