Thread: 22" .270 Win Load : Accuracy or Speed?

Load developing for my Rem 700 rifle in .270Win. 22" pencil pipe barrel. wanting a good load for up to 300yd. Prod is Hornady 130gr SST. CBTO 2.800"/ 0.01" jump

See the pics of 2 loads shot at 100yrds yesterday. good weather and temp. Gun was off bench under shade of tree. 3 shot strings with cooling between. all the normal stuff.



I chronograph'd loads with a Crony branded one and they seem slow?? hit a node at 59gr 2213SC but speed only 2775 avg?? is this normal?

Maybe hitting a node at 61.5gr 2213SC, (was max I went to) speeds are better. no pressure signs showing.

Brass is Winchester brass, is this the problem?

What are others getting for speeds?

Do I just go for the 59gr load and take a hit on the velocity etc?

I would take accuracy every time over velocity. It does seem a little slow 2775fps for a 130gr but some barrels are different. I was getting 2900fps with the 130gr SST with a near max load 2213sc in 21" Finnlight barrel and groups 1/2" @ 100m. Have you tried different seating depths? it may help.

Take the accuracy.
A speed of 2775 will kill very well out to and beyond 300 yards.
SST's can get quite frangible on game if pushed too hard.
There are plenty of other powder options for more speed if you can't get the speed and accuracy that you are after from 2213SC.

Yeh I am the same, accuracy over speed.
Tiresome I know but I'd load another few loads around your safe but higher loads and chrono them. If happy enough with that id go with that node.
Your projectile choice will influence your wanted speed.

Did 100 rounds for my mate with 58gr 2213SC with the same pill. He was not interested in speed but accuracy. He head shoots with it spot lighting.How he does it I don't know but he is built like an outhouse.

My old Sako finnibear was 57 gn 2213 sc doing 3000fps with a 130 sierra. Clover leaf at 100. 24" barrel. Yours seems slow but go for accuracy. Only a few more clicks of elevation at the end of the day.

Cheers for the advice, it always seems to come back to the 130gr should be doing 2900-3000 fps.

Shot a very similar group to #3 (59gr 2213SC) using the same prod, seating depth etc but 54.5gr 2209 powder, velocity was 2801 avg and ES 29.

What seating depths have you all tried and had success with? (I know it can be different in each rifle etc etc)

My book says 3.180 OAL. Did same load[powder] for 130gr Barnes but it goes to top cannelure for another mate running a can on his.Using it for bulls up the coast. Did a run in shot on a hind up the lake @250m thru the shoulders. Lifted it straight up then it plonked right down.

Baz, I also have a 22" inch barreled remington .270. My rifle is long throated and i seat the pills right out. I need to go to 56 gns of 2209, 55 gns of WW 760 or 63 gns of h4831/2213SC to get 3000 fps with a 130 gn projectile. I chrono a bit of factory and found a lot of american loadings (pmc, federal remington, winchester) do not give more than 2800 to 2900 fps. Regular cup and core 130s work really well at these velocities on medium game.

Switch to the 150 sst/58gn 2213, if you must use sst's, seat of the pants tells me that you will get around 2900 fps (yes faster than your 130 is doing), better bc, better sd, better velocity and better (more reliable) terminal performance than the 130 sst- try it, to prove the point I will send you a few if you need, at sub 2800 velocity for 130 in your .270, bin it and get a .308, cause your current .270 is missing the whole point of a .270 at the mo!

If you're only prepared to shoot out to 300yards (like, you only see Deer out to 300yards!) don't worry about "the point" of your calibre. At that distance and speed, your projectile will still be doing its job ie changing into a shape that kills yummy deer.

Beware the man who knows EXACTLY where his bullet will hit.

I get what you're saying, but the deer he shoots at 280yards doesn't give a fuck if the bullet that killed it could have killed another deer at 800yards.

Horses for courses and if you don't have a long range possie, why worry about it.

Plus, he's comparing a slower, accurate bullet with a fast, inaccurate bullet.

For hunting there's nothing wrong with that fast load.
