It's not just a fad Micky. I probably have some confirmation bias being the owner of two fast twist 22cals, but the numbers are convincing: heavy high BC bullets help the 223 punch even more above its weight.

1:7 has basically been the default twist rate for 5.56 for decades. It means you can shoot practically anything. For militaries this was mainly for things like tracers and steel core. But the yanks also figured out that they could extend the useful range of their rifles with ammo like Mk262 which uses a 77gr SMK. It was adopted over 20 years ago.

Slow twist rates have hung around in the civilian market for the folks only interested in standard 55gr stuff and varminting.
