    223 Goat projectiles

    Morning everyone,
What projectiles are people using for goats, out to 400ish metres?

    Cheers

It doesn't really matter as long as its not FMJ.

Can't think of a single projectile I've used on goats that made me think ooohhhh shouldn't use that on goats. Except maybe some of the expensive ones...

Assuming you've a 1:8" .223 I'd go with any of the current crop of ELD-whatever, TMK, TGK, etc etc. You'll want something with a decent BC for 400m.

400M is getting out there for the .223 I would normally say the Hornady 55grn SP but if you are talking that distance I would try 73grn ELDM if you have a 1-8 twist.

Ive used the 55gr hornady sp for years out to 300ish on fallow and goats. Past that id look at the 65gr gameking or the hornady eld-m

Treat Goats with the same humane respect that you would Deer, use the most reliable projectiles, at acceptable distances.

    Nanny goats are fantastic eating.

62 gr speer gold dot would be highly recommended as would the hornady of the same weight for just about everything. Belmont used them interchangeably a few years ago.

Their bleating if not hit properly gives me the shivers. They deserve to be killed cleanly.

They can be real drama queens though. Like footballers taking a dive. Look at this one for a Hollywood...

Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

Of course, hence the question…. Obviously all factors considered before taking a longer shot. I have had a friend ask me to cull a few off their property, so just looking to choose the most effective projectile to drop them on the spot.

Agree the nanny’s are surprisingly good eating. Also make good dog food

Dropping on the spot is more about shot placement than projectiles....well two sides of same coin really. Goats aren't hard to kill cleanly...and if culling ,you shoot as many as you can as fast as you can, then clean up mess...the screaming of wounded goat is indeed horrid so best avoided... Fmj does work with good shot placement but there are far better options ,unless your load is right on verge of being unstable...then it can be very effective.the faster twists have if anything made fmj less effective.

Are they more active at night, like other animals ? I seem to see plenty during daylight hrs while I’m driving around…….

I don't think so I've never seen them out feeding like deer.
Usually see them sleeping under overhangs and on rock ledges that retain the heat just on evening.

No, goats are diurnal. They bed down at dusk and often don't emerge from cover until later the next morning.

I would say just use whatever you’re accurately sighted in for. Majority of my animals are shot with Hornady SP 55’s although current lot of Belmont is loaded with Speers I think, accurate enough as long as I sort ammo by headstamp. Have had good success with reloads using 55 V Max out to around 430 m, still expand quite well at range although velocity is getting down at that range. Also use 73 gr ELDM’s from time to time, very effective. I have good dope for all my loads so usually confident of my shots as long as there’s not too much wind. Usually try to get within 350 m if I can. I also probably practice out to 600 yards/549 metres on targets more than I shoot animals past about 380m

I've just started to use Sierra 69G HPBT and they are preforming very well. I have developed this load of deer, though I have only shot fellow to date.
I use the Belmont Hornady 55's as well and find these work very well on goats, not sure if they still do the deals on 1000 round cans, but these were a good price and split between a couple of mates shooting .223 it is a good deal.
As everyone has said shot placement is the key.
