223 Goat projectiles

side on any 55 gr bullet thats not an FMJ will do the business, heart lung just behind the front leg.
Not ideal for Ass on shots however.
I've loaded a few Sierra Game kings 63-64gr ?? that my son had sacked a few goats with. Have a bit more penetration for less that ideal shot placement
I will say side on chest shot goats are not very wide and there is not a lot to start a bullet deforming so I would stay away from anything thats advertised as a deep penetrating bullet.
(my 243 has this problem, 87gr VLD Berger Great stuff, 108gr ELDM not so great, needs more than 200mm of body to do it's thing.)
Big Hammer Coppers will take a goat on length wise. Found a petal under the skin by the shoulder, Main slug base went the length and exited out the front.

As mentioned by @woods223 wind is a big thing (actually a really big thing) when reaching out past 250M with a 223 - whilst 55s will do the job under that, in any wind you have to be spot on with your wind calls over it, the 69s and up give a significant improvement on wind bucking.
@gmm - interesting re the 69s, they shoot well in so many different 223s but I've always been too "conservative" to try them on deer or game, can you tell us a bit more. Ta

53gr Sierra. Killed 000's of goats with them.

HI Tentman, just started to use them they are a hollow point boat tail, have only shot a few fellow with them but just poleaxed them, but were neck shots. I have a 1:8 twist and did my testing with 2206H and found that 25.5 gr worked best and had consistent speeds, 3023 to 3037 over 5 shots. Grouped the best. Will try them on the reds later in the year and keep you updated on how they go.

Any of the 55 grain sp are good on goats but using the 62grain side by side you can physically hear them hitting harder and see the extra hitting power they have

Closer in, its hard to go past a Hornady 55SP.
Further out I've been using the Hornady 75BTHPs for years, they dump a lot of destruction into a goat out at 300m.

Just use a vmax, any weight you fancy.

To an extent MD. Yesterday I was using some old mixed ammo on goats. Shot one at about 100m with I believe a sierra blitz bullet in what turned out to be lower scapular. Goat carried on trotting off on three legs but got it with follow up shot. First bullet blew up on bone and didn’t do enough damage to drop animal on spot. Bad shot and maybe wrong bullet although other four goats were dropped with good shots. V Max have done similar with shoulder shots on big billies although they are usually quite effective bullets.

Sorry my bad,I was referring to IF you were using a fmj or indeed something really hard .... When using really soft projectiles I change point of aim to MISS shoulder bones.... Well that's the theory anyway,good intentions and all that.a VMAX slipped into crease or neck up close to head are fairly efficient to put it mildly.
