    Smile 270 loads

    evening ,
I am going to use a borrowed rifle for a while .A 270 win sako . SO i am going to build a load for it ...
    I have 2209 , 2208 , R19 , 2206H and some N160 .
I got hundred Hornady 130 sst , REM primers, CCI , and fiocci primers as well .

Now the 270 calibre is not really my turf ( more a 7mm-08 sorta guy ) but i got enough gear and a labrader chrono to get into a fair bit of trouble .
So what are people thinking ?
I dont get anything closer than 200 mts and have to shoot out to 400 mts too often as well .
and FYI , I got GRT as well (and i use it ) but im not really wanting to put 150 bucks down range looking for a sweet spot in a calibre / load that i not really familar with . SO , i,d appreciate some help with a good realiable load using what i got. Some place to start .............
    thanks
    les

Haven’t tried any of those powders. I use AR2213sc in .270s, so of the ones you’ve got I’d start with N160.

Shame about the chosen pill, don't drive it too fast. 3000fps will be plenty. Stay off major bone and heavy muscle inside 200yds.

I would use N160 sorry i don't have an data for it but i used to know a guy that used it in his .270 for years and it shot bloody well.
I used quite a few kg of it through my .25-06 as well and it was super accurate with bloody good speeds.

    Greetings @LJPRMC,
The go to powder for the .270 was IMR4350 (similar to AR2209) prior to the appearance of 4831 (now H4831 or AR2213SC) and was IMR4064 (similar to Varget or AR2208) prior to WW2. Rather than suggesting loads, I don't load for the .270, you could use my go to method. I first chronograph the start load to compare with the Hodgdons data. You need to adjust the book velocity for your barrel length. This lets me check if my powder lot, projectile, rifle combination is giving similar results. Next work up in steps of a grain chronographing along the way until you get close to your target velocity of say 3,000 fps or a little less if your barrel is shorter than standard. This should take no more than 10 rounds and your last load will likely be accurate. You can fiddle around with the load from here if you want too. A word of warning about AR2209. The Hodgdons/ ADI data for the 130 grain Hornady is in CUP which suggests that this is for the older and slower version of AR2209. You may find your velocities higher than the book would suggest.
I long ago gave up the slavish working up from start loads in tiny steps and looking for pressure signs that some tend to delight in. Most, if not all, of the pressure guessing techniques suggested have been debunked as practically worthless and velocity from good pressure tested data has emerged as the best guide to pressure for the average handloader.
Regards and all the best for your load developement Grandpamac.

agree about the 130grn SST...... they are very blowupy great for wallabies n goats in varmit type set up..not so good for meat recovery unless neck or crease shooting.... the cup n core 130s are good stuff, dont need fancy plastic tip,140s and 150s even better.
I dont use any of those powders, did use 2206 years ago as have OLD OLD data for it,but case is only 60-70% full, they go bang and work but a fuller case is much better.

2209 is perfectly fine for the .270, should get decent velocity with it. You'll find the loads on the adi website, just use the soft point data.
Data – Rifle – ADI World Class Powders and Ammunition
130gr SST 's are awesome too, especially for the range you have said you'll be shooting. For 200 to 400 plus metres they are ideal. Do plenty of damage.

2209 behind a 130. The sweet spot will be between 53 and 55 grains in most brass with a LR primer. 54.5 and 55 in my 2 .270 Win rifles in WW and PMC brass.
N160 and RL-19 are a touch slower than 2209 so you're probably going to need a bit more for similar velocities. I'd start with the 2209 and only try the others if you don't get acceptable accuracy at your best node.

    130 SST x 270 Win + LOST DEER
    --------------------------------------- Equals Crap Load
    10 litres shot damaged meat

Because weight for weight a 270 projectile is going faster than in your 7mm08 it needs to be harder. Projectiles are cheap relative to the meat value so buy some good bonded ones. Soft thin jacket projectiles ( like SST)are only popular because they are very easy to get shooting well

OK....so compromise here....... the 130grn SST is not popular up close as has reputation for blowing up BUT should be OK out between 200-400 yards as TLB seems to have good run with them.....personally would still be careful about shot placement....now to appease M H ...257 ...and to some degree myself buy a single box of factory 150grn winchester power point....zero rifle with your SST load say 2" high and then check 3 shots of the factory 150s..chances are they will be between the 130s and bull so use them as your spook n shoot load...poke two on top of mag....no trouble to flick them out when setting up for a longer shot and have COMPLETE confidence and faith that sub 200 yards,ol red skin is going to go nowhere and will be leaving big red painted trail where it does go.
neck shooting with them 130s if confident to do so should be very effective,a near miss of bone should be messy enough to still disable animal. Ive got 20-30 of them loaded up to turn hoppers into stinkers, just havent got out to use them yet.

I personally don't worry about damaged meat, infact other than monolithic bullets you wouldn't catch me eating meat from the wound area of most shoulder shot animals. Sooner lose meat from the front end and have a dead deer.
As others have mentioned above, they may be a little soft for a close up shoulder bone shot. I use a .223 a lot so it is just second nature to slip the bullet just behind the shoulder, or head/neck.
Other option is to load some with a min load of 2208 so they are going a couple of hundred fps slower. Doesn't matter if they don't group fantastic as it is just a close range load. I do it with 110gr bullets and just color some of it in with vivid so I can tell which is which and have that as my first round.
At the end of the day they are what you have and they do work well so use them.

Just checked, Guncity Napier has 140gr Sierra Game Changers $119 / 100. Much better than SSt, I have used them and they do make more mess than I consider ideal... but they do punch a hole right through without blowing up. (I bought a box to have on hand if I cant get AB's.) Even a poor hit / bad angle will kill whereas the 130 SSt will result in flesh wounds from shoulder shots and lost animals.
