Soon to take delivery of my first .270 and looking at available projectiles, the highest BC I can find is .536 for 145 ELD-X. That’s reasonable, but lags well behind the 6.5, 7 mm and heavier .30s. There can’t be any reason for this than underinvestment by manufacturers. Come on Hornady, Berger, Sierra etc, please try a bit harder for us .270 (and WSM) followers.
Any advice out there regarding other offerings (not LRABs).

How far are you trying to shoot stuff? All those projectiles (and plenty more) provide more than enough oomph when launched at 270 speeds for a very long way out.

I set up with the bipod, dialled in 940 yds, first shot missed so allowed a little more for windage, and proceeded to hit the gong (300 x 300) with the next 3 shots.
Nothing wrong with the .270 out to stupid distances, and this was with 145Gr ELD -X

I have just started with the 140 AB in my 270. Since buying those I discovered that Nosler makes a 140 gr Partition. Very likely that bullet would be the best hunting 270 projectile there is.
If you go with a soft bullet like the ELD-X a lot of meat will be ruined and wasted. The balance is quick humane killing at all ranges combined with maximum meat recovery
Remember a lot of the new high BC offerings are made for WSM's and not 270 Win
I found the 140gn Nosler ABs (MV 3000 fps) to be good killers in my 270win. You've always got your 30cal and 7mm magnums if you want to shoot a loooong way.Quote:

From personal experience and discussions on this topic with guides on Trophy Parks. I am referring to stags in the rut, when they are pumped up and the neck and shoulder skin is thick and they are hard to kill unless its a neck shot with a hard bullet.Quote:

I shoot 170grn projectiles out of mine into tight wee groups...but they are too plurry good for poking at paper,it did same with 160grn lapua megas and every 150grn projectile tried...and its a 80s model 70 without controlled feed 1:10 twist.....try telling my rifle it wont stabalise them.Quote:

you folk with rangefinder and dialing up should be able to double that distance with no trouble at all.
I used the interbonds for years and they were good in most situations, esp for eater sized animals but I have lost stags with them with shoulder shots. Thats why I went to the AB for a try. But maybe the 140 Partition would be better ?Quote:

yip first hind went through in crease,missed both shoulders but munted lungs,2nd one was a loooong way from wagon but front legs were still in good nick,my day bag was bulging I tell you....normally that far from wagon Im happy when I shoot up the shoulder meat....dont feel guilty leaving it behind.
I shoot the 150berger and i happily shoot stuff out to 800 yards from my 270 tikka, i shoot them at 2900fps, even poleaxed a tahr at 665 yards. Gonna swith to sst 150gr for more of an allrounder and keep the bergers for longer shots. The shoot same load same poi.
Getting good at shooting is more important really, 270 isnt a target calibre really so for hunting its all good way beyond what most people can shoot at. Dont worry about silly numbers you get from people on the net, if you wanna see if the bullet will fully expand, go place a gel block at that max distance and shoot it and test for yourself.
Please dont go to the SST, they are a varmit bullet really. Read through the previous posts here, there is one detailing a stag shot five times with SSTQuote:

Amaxs/eldm are softer and thousands of deer get shot every year with them. I'm running factory 130 gr superformance ssts going fairly quick through mine for the mean time until I get around to developing a different load.Quote:

I also chest shot a big bodied red stag last week with the .223, made it about 15 yards before tipping over.
Pretty simple really, if it's soft or lacks grunt avoid the main shoulder bone. Soft bullets have their upsides, more damage and reliably opening up at low velocities are big plusses depending on the type of hunting you do.
Shot placement is the key!
partitions cost more but they do what J.N. intended when he designed them...kill stuff deader than dead. if you already have a good sleak longrange load that is working for you.....why not just load up a bog std soft point or a partition for spook n shoot type hunting...it takes a couple of seconds to slip in sleak load if n when oppotunity arrises. the 130grn sst and the 130grn balistic tip both have bad reputation for OCCASIONALLY opening up too fast up close /at speed and loosing big animal...Ive shot quite a number of hinds with BTs and as long as I DID hit shoulder bones they went down fast...chest shot deer were dead on feet but didnt know it.
in 30 years of using the calibre only once has load let me down,and it was entirely my fault....wondered what a 110grn hp varmit load would be like on small fallow,,,and found out,,,,useless on shoulder shot,blew pudding bowl sized shallow crater,massive shock but no penertration,wouldve worked on neck,but not shoulder...mate did same on red hind and lost it.....use a good or heavy load please.....please learn from others mishaps and dont risk loosing that once in lifetime stag.
