270win reloading
Hi folks.
I've got a mate whose looking at the price of 270 factory ammo and some inconsistent boxes of late and is thinking of buying some components and dies that he can use through my press.
Does a fair bit of tops stuff for Chamois out to 450m or so.
As I have NO experience with 270s I've already asked a particular Ryan for his thoughts but was just wanting to see what else is worth considering for powder, projectiles etc.
Cheers

2213sc, 2217, rl26 and many others. Out to 450, Id recommend either the 140 nbt or 145eldx.

Your mates biggest problem is like the factory ammo getting a regular supply of components when he finds a load that suits. I'm using Hornady 145"s and Berger 140's, they work for me and at the moment the Bergers are still available. Powder, I use 2213sc which is getting hard to find like all ADI powders.

Imr4955 and 140ssts. Mate did that on r weekend and 5 of the 6 charges were moa or less
-
145 eldx and Hodgdon superprofrmance or other slow powders it will depend on what you can get.

There is SP and 4955 in Auckland but a bit far for your mate James unless someone is heading down

Win760 and 2213sc for me.

im just running a pretty simple load, 2208 behind a hndy 140gr interlock, drops animals pretty well but i dont often take it past 300... for that range probably a 145eld x behind 2213sc or rl26?
-
The Interlocks are excellent bullets in the 270 - hit like the hammer of Thor. And if you cant find any 2213/4831, then Superformance performs really well in the 270. Probably about 56-58gns

its a .270w you do not need to over think it.....
chammy arent a tough animal.....450 yards isnt a huge distance and one would assume/hope he will be dialing up and twiddlin n fiddlin out past 350......
speer make some great soft projectiles cheaper and easier to find than the flash hornady ones....
NBTs just plain old work.......
hornady sp are just boringly reliable and accurate
your mate pokes a .277" sized hole in chest/front wheels of chammy and it wont be going anywhere.
see what components you can get...2213sc is my usual powder or the hodgdon equivilent 760 from winchester is very nice to load too. others like 2208.... what you can get is more important.
pick load down the scale and work up..my rifles happy near top...RUMPYs one like it nearer bottom of scale.... DO NOT ASSUME,start low and work up... you only need a couple of each load to check it for pressures...the OLD WAY of doing it.... look at primer, look for swipe marks, feel for bolt resistance.
for years my loads were rather on mild side, only a little above minimum and I still killed animals.
accuracy and reliable repeatability are hand in hand and much more important that top velocity.... fast is good to be sure, but being able to hit right spot more so.

I was using 130gr Nosler BT and 2209 in my 270 years ago.....

Another vote for 2213sc and 145eldx. Had good results with 2217 also. The powders can be found in stores if you ring around a bit and can travel!

Does anyone know if theres any 145 eldx floating around at the minute? My local store and most websites seem to be out.

Try some venom Speers btsp
The 150gr Speer hotcor
Partions 150gr
Or Hornady sst again 150 for those yards.
