    30 30 reloads

Gday, just after some advice. I'm wanting to load some 110 grain sierras for my 3030 for bailed pigs.
I have everything sorted bar the powder, does anyone no the best powder option? Doesn't need to be super accurate or fast etc, most shots within 5 or 10 meters
    Thanks

    Greetings,
My old No9 Speer manual lists a light load of IMR4895, 31 grains for 2,170 fps with the 110 grain Speer Varminter. The same load with AR2206H would be close. Hodgdon/ ADI list a start of 34 grains of H4895/ AR2206H and a max of 37 grains for the 110 grain. I am sure that you know not to load anything other than flat nose projectile in the mag for lever actions.

If the speers Don't have a cannelure to crimp into you will have to single load for a lever gun. For that application I'd use cast bullets like robs 150 gr with 8 to10 grains of a pistol powder. It will give about the same speed as a supersonic .22 and have much better penetration and be quieter on the dogs and your ears. If you need to they are quite capable of bigger things out to the limit dictated by the sights.

I have always used 2206H with my 30-30 loads, both jacketed and lead projectiles. Will have a look for a load when I get home but I am sure it was just off the ADI website

30-30 loves IMR 3031 - if you can find it. There is current load data on Hogdon site online

I find these projectiles are easier to use than cast bullets and they do not need crimping if you dies are good.
Cast bullets do need a good solid crimp jacketed not so much.
I would also consider faster powders as the Lyman cast bullet book has plenty of data as does ADI cowboy loads website.
Also Remington 110 gr round nose are good on wallabies and should do what you want.

I disagree, crimp everything into a cannelure. The bullets dont set back from recoil, but from the shunting back they take as one is lifted out of the tube magazine. Any ammo you didnt shoot when you went hunting gets worked through the action to unload, and after doing that three or four times the ammo will start to set back unless your usng a bullet with a proper cannelure and with a proper crimp, and a proper crimp means a Lee Crimp Die.
anyway, assuming the OP knows what he is about on that matter, to answer the question - use AR2208, AR2206 or IMR3031, any of these is perfect. Whichever one you can find in the shops. I prefered 2208.

For a low powered load I would use AP70N, and use Unique load data. 7.5 grains and a 150 grain bullet will do about the same thing as the old Winchester 92 .44 or .38 loads used to do, and they were mostly used on bailed pigs in this country. 7.5 grains gets about 1100fps and 10-11 grains will get 1500fp.

I don't think the 110 Sierras are tough enough for pigs they are a Varmint bullet and designed to fragment very quickly they may not penetrate far enough for a clean kill
using regular type powders will push them at too high a velocity for what you want, Powders like 700X, Red Dot, AS30, AS50 with a charge of around 7.0 grains
will be about 1200 -1400 fps,
I would be happy to send you some of my cast bullets to try, There is nothing tricky about loading them,
    Cheers

few things to consider that havent been mentioned and are often overlooked

bailed pigs you can go one of three ways
hit em with something with shit ton of whoomph...like 30/30----44mag and blow big hole in the important bits, with some room for error..may or maynot exit
hit em accurately with a lighter load that will pretty much explode inside and not exit,I put 222----223 in this bracket..and a load like you suggesting too
hit them VERY accurately with a subsonic big heavy load...piss poor shooting WILL NOT cut the mustard here.

    the balancing act
you want enough power to kill pig quickly out right
you dont want too much power to destroy half the pig or zip out other side and risk dogs
you can have heaps of penertration ------heaps of expansion -----heaps of both---or stuff all of either..all will work with above in mind
workout what yo uwant/need load to do and go from there
there was member who was often in other pub who shot LOTS of pigs..used .22magnum and his huge ferocious pack of dogs consisted of a single foxy and if having trouble he brought out the real big guns and employs 2nd foxy to help keep pigs contained..well actually 3/4 of foxy is possibly more accurate as had one leg missing
    its all about balance

    Greetings,
I think @Micky Duck has summed it up very well. The Speer 110 grain Varminter has a cannelure in the right place so can be crimped plus a flat nose so are mag safe in a tube mag. They are pretty soft though. There are 130 grain projectiles made for the .30-30 that are tougher and the traditional 150 and 170 grain projectiles so it is just a matter of deciding between the options that Micky has laid out. If your rifle is a single shot or has a box mag then you have more options. The choice is yours.
Regards and the best of luck Grandpamac.

Yes I should’ve cut that bit off, it was just for the 110gr info.
Ken Waters articles are a wealth of information, and provided many hours of reading.
