Hey team. I have a question regarding powders for the 300 Win Mag - I’m looking to launch a 180gr to 220gr projectile from a 24” barrel and would like to know what is the best temperature stable (ADI only) powder to use?
I’ve heard 2225 is good but I’ve also been told that 2217 & 2209 also fit the bill. Please advise what your experiences has been as I’m going to hunt in the warm parts of the north island and alps down south and would like as much consistency as possible. Cheers!
What ever you can get your hands on at the moment 2225 would probably be your best
Primers will be a problem if you don't already have them, there are plenty of other powders will do the job if you don't limit yourself to adi
of far more importance/relevance is which powder can you get your hands on...and in enough quantity that your expensively developed load doesnt have to be rejigged in 6 mths as youve run out of that powder type and cant get more. in my experience it isnt a huge issue unless your #A pushing envelope running hot loads #B stretching the barrel enough that a 50fps difference means a miss.
Any of those powders (2209, 2217, 2225) would be considered temp stable, although ADI doesn't seem to advertise them as such.
All of the Hodgdon extreme powders are repackaged ADI, and they are advertised as been temperature stable.
A lot of Yanks do temperatrue sensitivity tests and these "ADI" powders are alway the least sensitive.
A bit of Googling suggests H1000 and H4350 (2217 and 2209) are the most stable powders available, with Retumbo (2225) still being good just not as excellent as the other two.

Less than 200gn ,2217. For 200+ 2225. Either will do but one slightly better for the heavys and one slightly better for the lighter weights. Depends how fast you wish to push them, mag length as you use more 2225 so that fills the case more. Often around 2-3 gns more. All temp stable. 300 mag deserves a 200+ projectile.

In that barrel length 2217 seems to give best velocity
I run a 225 eldm in my win mag and get 2900 fps out a standard Rem
26” barrel 2930 out a criterion replacement and out of mates tikka with same load seated deeper
It is compressed load He gets 2820 average
Also goes great with the targex 190’s
At least for 180 gn bullets AR2217, but overall probably I've had best results with AR2213sc, especially loading long mono metal bullets that rob you of room for AR2217 that keeps velocity lower than optimal. I've also found with AR2213sc I don't seem to encounter over pressure issues but still get great velocity. Seems to be a well behaved propellant.
I'm not sure about powders for 200 gn bullets as I've never loaded for those.
2217/H1000 is very temp stable and normally (yes, I know) reasonably easy to get hold of.
My .300 WM with a 26" Bartlein does 2980 with 208 ELD-M with 2217.
