300 WSM subsonic any advice please....is it worth it????

    Hi fellas
I'm thinking about having a play with Subs for my 300wsm sadly i am still looking at 80m to 100m+ shots as im shooting in mostly open country and its harder to get up close. so I am looking for any advice on....

what's the best weight and type of projectile?
what powder should i use and what amount is a good starting point?
bullet drop at this type of range so i know were to start?
and most importantly is it worth all the effort and cost using this calibre?

Any help and comments will be welcomed.....
    Cheers

shootersnz makes an awesome 151grn hollow point cast lead .308 pill
    trailboss is easy starting point
    is it worth it????
for finishing off animal without big bang YES
for close range animals that arent spooked YES
for hares ,rabbits or possums while out after deer YES
goats and wallabies in same situation YES
BULLET DROP....my x39mm is 7" different between sub and super at 60 yards so you have to think very hard about how to approach it

they are a lot of fun and do work...you just have to think it through.

You will probably have far too much case capacity.
308 is okay with 180+ grain projectiles 150gr do not seat deep enough and require too little powder to have good case full for subs with trailboss. 56grain water vs ~80 grains for 300wsm. Even with 220 grain pills you will more than likely be well below 50%.

I have no experience with fillers so cant comment on that.

WSM wouldnt be my first choice . . . but i don't see why it couldnt work.

'' is it worth it '' is only something you can answer, we are all different, some on here are cheap bastards ( no offence ) and some spend like there is no tomorrow . . . i enjoy playing with them & have had some good results & a lot of fun learning how to get good results . . . give it a go if you like a challenge . . . otherwise stay clear.

another way to approach this would be to use same projectile as above but at reduced but not subsonic speed eg 1800fps or some such.... you would still be shite loads quieter than full power loads still have .30/30 type preformance and have very low recoil and noise....... with trail boss simply use same VOLUME of powder as your normal load for a starting point.

I have a 200grain HP cast bullet that should work ok, I am not sure if Trail Boss will work for subs in the WSM case it is rather large capacity
it needs to be at least 60% full to be safe you can't use fillers with Trail Boss, The other powder to try is AP70 10.0 grains works ok in a 30/06
and you can use fillers with it.

Too much case capacity mate. You will only be using 10 to 11 grains of trail boss.
Make sure you research sub loads before reloading for them.

    as above,
Trailboss and the heaviest bullet you can get.
243 with 8gr TB and 105gr is just subsonic but I'm not comfortable shooting with a case thats only 60% full so did not continue. (OK shooting up hill but where dose the powder go shooting down hill.)
    358 win 12gr TB and 158gr gave 1450 fps.
13-14 gr of TB is a full case in the 308 family so from my experience I suspect you may have problems getting the larger cased 300 WSM subsonic.
If you are happy with a 22 WMR type noise level them go for it.

the whole subsonic thing might well be overrated at end of day....yip its a lot of fun yip you could well shoot more than one animal but suppressed full power loads sometimes alow that too as animals dont know WHERE a shot comes from..... a QUIETER and slower load has merit if you feel overgunned in current situation..100-150 yards open country wasnt it?? piece of piss to down load your big cannon to .30/30 type specs and noise factor HAS to go down aswell, after all you are using less "bang powder" the .222 and .223 were praised to the hilt back in the day for reduced noise and game in next gully/ridge/over hill werent spooked by the rolling thunder clap of a .308/.270 etc etc I cant see a reduced load through suppressor being any different, back when I first started on subsonic path and trying to find correct load by noise the too fast loads werent loud by any means.
have a tootoo and see how you get on.

trailboss is you only choice in powder and I am assuming 10 twist so pushing a 200gr bullet is about max, no way to go to the 240s.
