Toby
I can look up some loads in my Manuals and post some pics if this helps.
Cheers
Pete
That would be very helpful Thanks.
I can't find any load in my data using that powder to projectile weight
Toby
This is what I have.
Lee 2nd edition, 150gr Projectiles
W748 start 45.4grs max 45.4grs 2564fps
Speer Number13 150gr projectiles
W760 Start 44.0grs 2319fps max 48.0grs 2575fps (recommends to use magnum primer).
Nick Harvey 2nd edition 150gr Projectile
W760 start 46.0grs 2370fps max 50.0grs 2600fps
Lyman 48th edition 150gr Projectile
W748 start 39.0grs 2149fps max 43.5grs 2523fps
Hope that helps.
Kiwi Sapper shoots the 303 a lot and may have some better information.
What action are you loading for?
Cheers
Pete
Awesome that'll do me fine.
lee enfeild.
Lucky I asked here I went on google and came up with 50gr 760 but it filled into the neck and didnt feel right in my gut.
Lucky alright.
Although Nick Harvey lists 50grs of w760 as the maximum.
But it's never a good idea to work up a reload starting at the maximum.
I believe the Lee Enfield action is rated at 45,000cup and is possibly the weaker of the actions used for 303 British.
But someone who knows more about this might be able to enlighten us all.
Make sure you have the headspace checked too.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers

I loaded up some at 44gr. Just want bullets to shoot. Gun was fine last time it was used except for the aluminum butt plate. Will change that one day
Fark these .303 projectiles are expensive.

I have a box of seirra pro hunters cant remember how much they were. 60 something for 100
If you're after cheap projectiles for .303, be sure to try the hornady 174gr RN. They're a genuine .312 projectile, and work a lot better in worn barrels. They aren't much good beyond about 200m but are good within that range.
For powder, most of the service rifle guys run 2206H or 2208 with good success. Just a thought if you aren't too committed to using 748 or 760.
I use Barnaul FMJs, 174gr flat base, 32cents each. I use them for target shooting to 600m on my no4 mk2s. A standard no4 mk2 should do 1 3/4MOA at 100yds, good accuriased ones get to 1 inch MOA. No4 mk1s about 2inch MOA, though the T's were better. I suspect its a quality control thing from war time production and how good a barrel you got/get ie the wartime ones were rush jobs and sometimes not very good. If you are getting worse there is something wrong, often bedding or bore wear.
Service rifle has classes so its say 10 x 303s shooting against each other and not 303s v AR15s. Of course at 500yds+ the .223 AR15 is no where, 100m and they are impossible to beat.
ADI Powders Handloaders' Guide
according to that winchester748 is roughly ADI2206H and w760 is ADI2209. I use 2208. I dont know what 303 you have but a P14 is a bit stronger than a no4 lee enfield, however no4s were fitted wth 308w barrels so would have 45~47gr of 2208!
I'd start at the min, your brass will last longer and its safer. Headspace should be tight-ish as well.
I use Fed210 primers, 1943 brass though I just got some new Privy brass to try this weekend. Also some once fired winchester Ive reloaded to try with sierra matchkings. I have some S&B brass but that needed de-crimping and ppl tell me it doesnt last.
This .303 has a brand new barrel so I would guess it has correct headspace. I use ppu brass and fed mag primers though I ran out with about 5 left so fed large rifle primers.
If you're lucky enough to have a newish barrel on there you don't want to spoil it... If it were fitted by a proper smith, you'd hope he'd have set it up properly. Maybe see if you can borrow a headspace gauge set and have a quick check, Toby, it's fairly important on the lee-Enfield that it's within limits. They produced different numbered (sort of oversizing like pistons) bolt heads for headspace correction in the field. I hope it's a nice shooter.
Shot the last couple of boxes just fine
If its a bit large in the head space its not a huge issue as long as you neck size and don't bump the shoulder right back when fl sizing.
IE size properly not just wind the die down till it hits the case holder.
If you want to shoot in service class, you can't use match projectiles. 174gr fmj is the ideal, but the 174gr RN is acceptable according to the rules.
With 174gr RN handloads, my 1942 long branch will shoot into 2 MOA with iron sights. I suspect it could do a smidge better, but I'm the limiting factor.
Definitely neck size your fired brass. It'll last tons longer that FL sizing. You'll need to FL size every now and again, say every 4 to 6 loads, maybe sooner if you shoot hot loads, but neck sizing will get you a lot more reloads until you start to get signs of case separation.
Also, .303 is one round that benefits from crimping the projectile (don't ask me why, but it is) if you can, try to borrow a lee crimp die and try a light to moderate crimp and see if your groups tighten up.
Here you go. The official word via the service rifle match code. Sets out the rifle/ammo requirements, and describes core matches etc.

Well that was short lived.
I wanted to buy that .303 from my brother but he decided to sell it to his mate for 5hundy.
Kinda pissed as it was a really nice gun and I was lining up a nice 4x40 scope and a limbsaver pad for when I got it.
Oh well lucky I have my crappy smelly in there to use my loads in
bummer...
but $500 without a scope would be a bit steep.
once fired brass from highland
Here it is

Thats not a bad stock there Toby, Shame about the bolt though
Hi! If need some head space gauges I've got a set of Okie coin gauges you can borrow . There not as easy to use as cartridge style gauges but the work very well when used properly!
Hey, thanks for the kind offer @Burb122 but I don't need them.
Cheers
No worries!
Cheers for the .303 loads @P38
They have a neat little feature where they drive the projectile right around a deer at 20m but oh well. Plently of goats fell to my old girl today. Not bad for a open sight rifle with no rifling at the end of the barrel I thought. Though the deer would have been nice to give to someone

That one was rather funny, I shot the big one which dropped onto the small white one and trapped it, I walked right to it to finish it.

I think it was somewhere between 30-40 for the day, best part was 7 goats running up the track a head of us and 3 others that jumped off the side one was a big billy and my little brother and mate both wanted to shoot the billy so I had these other 7 to my self, I shot 5 for 6 shots then we drove up and got the other 2

@Toby
No worries on the load data.
I think I know what causes those miss's, it's pretty simple really.

Your just naturally a piss poor shot
or
You got Buck Fever ....... and your a piss poor shot

All of the above. ;) :)
The goats only got hit because they saw you were gong to miss and quickly moved in front of the projectiles

You fluked it because every dog has its day.
