Thread: .308 Projectile change?

I run Nosler 125gr Accubonds in my 16" Tikka T3x .308. They work really well for me but are becoming more difficult to get. Gunworks seem to be one of the few places that stock them but don't know when they'll get more. Have been thinking of trying Hornady 150gr. Interlock BT. I run 130gr. Interlocks in my BSA Majestic .270 and have used them for 30+ years. Never let me down. Some suggest SST but have seen them do a lot of meat damage. My.308 load with 2206H gives me 2960fps so would work up a load with the same powder. Anyone out there using these projectiles in a short barrel and with what results? Thanks for any info.

yes I did...we used bog std 150grn hornady in BLR with both 2206 or 748...couple grains below max so werent eggzachary honking along...wallabies dies quick smart,red deer did too,and 12" bull thar my son shot......I also used 180grn round nose jobbies for bush work with great results.
dont over think it,just grab some while you can and go fill the freezer.

I'm using speer btsp 150 grn and getting 2600 from a 16 inch howa. 165 siera Spitzer bt from memory were around 2500 all with 2206h. Both killed really well and retained most of there weight. Managed to recover a couple of rounds

The 150 grain Hornady Interlock either falt base or boat tail should work just fine. The flat base shoots really well in my two 20 inch barrel .308 rifles using AR2206H. A recent test using 44 graina (1.5 grains below book max) chronographed 2,670 fps or about 2,600 fps in your rifle. 45.5 grains of AR2206H should give around 2,650 plus. There are few bad projectile choices for the .308.

Yep, I predominantly only ever used 150 gr projectiles in my 308, even though I'd collected a stock of projectiles heavier and lighter than the 150.
The 150 just plain worked.
Also I used the Speer 150 gr Spire Point which is probably not fashionable these days.

I’m running 165gr SST’s at 2,570 out of my bush pig. Awesome load. Dials up well too. Not sure why you are worried about meat damage. Good clean killing is important. We got 3 last night. Lungs etc were mush and nothing went further than 10 metres. And we got one front leg off each of them.
I’ve used a 308 for over 40 years, tried a heap of projectiles in the 150-165gr range. As @grandpamac said it’s a pretty easy cartridge to load for BUT I will stay with the SST’s because out of my rifle at the velocities they are loaded to they work.

How far are you shooting/what are you shooting? 155tmk would be good if not driven fast otherwise hard to beat a 150 interlock

Ranges can be from 30m in bush to 250-300m in open country but generally under 200m. Think I'll go with the Interlock giving the excellent results they have given me in my .270 ( 130gr. flat base).

yip you wont go wrong...and if you find the 140s or 150s in stock but not 130s.....just as good if not better.
I found the 140 version dead boring...slapped together a load...it shot under inch...shot 2 red hinds both at 300-350 yards and both fell over dead with meat saver shots through the crease,first one ran 150 yards downhill towards me,2nd one fell over after 50 yards,on both I lost less than handful of meat. put same bullet through shoulders and you will loose more...but you cant make an omlet without breaking eggs.thats in .270.
I have some 180grn round nose jobbies .308 which are AWESOME at bush ranges....if you find them in stock,dont be shy about using them.

The plain old Hornady SP (flat base) are easy to get to shot well. And do the job completely fine under 300m.
