    .405 Win

Hi all, long shot I know, but .405 is out of production at the moment but just thought I would put it out there and see if anyone had any brass/ammo in this calibre that they wanted to part company with? Getting it out of the States is even looking slim pickings.
    Cheers,
    Wayne

Hey thanks for this, I never even contemplated it. A bit more researching to do now to see if I can make this work.

Nah the .405 win has a thicker rim than all other potential donors such as .303 Brit, .444 marlin and 9.3x74R so its really only an option to buy factory brass..
    Some in stock is Australia

The case dimension I have says 1.854mm which is the same as the ones in the link I posted. Dimensions are actually listed in that link

    Greetings All,
The .303 case is actually shorter than the 405 and will become even shorter when expanded. The .30-40 Krag case is a little longer, if you can find any, but still comes up short. As far as the rim goes either of the the above cases will fit with about 0.2 mm excess head space. One of my .303 rifles has more than this but functions well with low pressure loads. If you decide to use .303 cases select those with the thickest rim and longest case. Some cases I have have rims down to 1.4 mm and short case lengths as well. The best option would be to buy the right case in the first place. If you are building a rifle you can get the chamber cut to suit your cases. From memory some recently built 405 rifles will not chamber original cases with their thicker rim.
    Regards Grandpamac.

Thanks you guys. I will purchase the correct brass, I had never thought of looking across the ditch. Got to sell my bloody soul to buy it though lol. They was a run on ammo when Miroku bought out the 1895 replica a few years back but has since dried up.
    Thanks again for the help.
    Kind regards

I have been messing with the .405Win & .303 cases for a while making up a few different rounds (6.5X53R, .375 Ex 2 1/2in + others) just measured a few rims just now

    .405
    Hornady 405 1.64mm to 1.66mm
Kynoch 405 most are around 1.75

    .303
    CAC 1.52
    Rem 1.54
    Ex mil 1.55

When I was looking to make .375Ex 2 1/2in from 303, 30/40, 405Win I found on the net a few guys could lengthen the case's by a drawing process by a large amount/length & still be safe.

I'm thinking great job for @Wingman as these could be used for the Everlasting .410 cases to ?

Most Aussie firms find it hard to deal with out of country orders in the firearm related field & that was before all our Shit happened !

I realize this is a long gone thread, but just an FYI Greg @ Custom guns sorted me out with seven boxes of Hornady .405 so pretty stoked. Bloody good buggar, there is still bits of stuff around if you dig deep enough.

I think it's one that Bertram do (did?).
The Handloaders's Manual Of Cartridge Conversions states 30-40 Krag can be used to make a short version.
7x65R Brenneke (yeah where do you get those) can be also adapted.
Goes on to say .405 is unique and these cases are always a compromise and are not as satisfactory as factory grass.
