Hey guys, new to re loading this cartridge and thought I’d see if anyone has some good advice.
Will be used in a break action single shot with 16.5” barrel only.
I have plenty of ADI AP50N that I am hoping to use. The manual says AP70N. But has anyone used the AP50N for loading 44mag?
Wanting to develop a sub and a supersonic round. Thinking of using cast semi wad cutter bullets.
Any help and info much appreciated. Cheers guys.
Do you know what weight projectile you'll be using? I use AS50n for subsonic and plinking loads in rifles (222 to 308), however have just about used it up so switching to another similar powder I managed to get hold of. You should be able to use AP50n for lighter weight, low power loads, but probably not full noise.
You should be able to use the data for APS450 on the ADI website - its the replacement powder for AS50n and AP50n, I haven't used it myself but I believe it is very similar to AP50n.
Note that if using cast lead bullets, you will be limited to lower velocities unless using a gas check or powder coated projectiles.
You should definitely be able to work up a subsonic load and "gentle" supersonic load. Punching some numbers into GRT, it looks like For 200-240gn bullets, probably want to start around 6.5gn of powder for 200gn (should give you around 1100 fps) and work down about another grain for 240gn bullets. But PLEASE bear in mind that GRT is just a simulation, not real life, and furthermore AP50n is not in GRT, I have used data that gives me similar results for my known loads for different cartridges. 6gn should be a conservative starting load though, and matches up with what's on the ADI website.
From there you could also work up a little bit to get a supersonic load. But to get the full potential from the cartridge in a rifle, you really need a slower powder and jacketed bullets like the XTP. But that doesn't sounds like what you are aiming for anyway.
I have some 230 gr cast projects to start playing with. But also looking for recommendations for a good jacked bullet for hotter loads.
Hunting what? Hornady do their XTP in 180gn and 240gn for the 44... $85/95 per box 100. You might be able to find other weights too.Quote:

AP50 is probably too fast. I have used AP70 with Berry played projectiles and found that was a little fast burning. Vihtavuori N110 is my preference for the 230ish grain bullets.Quote:

8g trail boss with same bullet are about 6in lower and similar group.
2205 is a great powder.
I used to use 18gr Blue Dot behind 180gr jacketed HP in my Marlin lever gun [about 30 years ago, so check current load table recommendations]. Load was hot, accurate, and dropped what it hit. Blue Dot was the most accurate powder I ever loaded in that gun. Would almost, but never quite, clover leaf three rounds at 100m.
Shot my first ever deer with that rifle/load combination, and my first stoat. Ahh, good old days!
