    6.5-284 loads

What powders are people using in this cartridge?
I read 2209 and 2213sc are commonly good performers with 140ish grain bullets.

The published load data looks pretty anemic. I was hoping to run around 2900fps.

How would it take to a 20inch barrel? I thought it might replicate the ballistics of my 260 at that.

    Appreciate your thoughts

Loading 2213sc in mates rifle, 2209 probably better suited to a 130. His load is mild, just under 2800 we did get it up to 2950 in a 22 inch barrel with no pressure signs, Lapua brass was accurate around 2930. His mate tried loading 143eldx using 2209 And managed to just about remove the headstamp on the brass trying to get the speed up, glad I never fired it.

6.5x284 has the case capacity for slower powders. I was using Ar2225 for the Berger 140 EH and 56.5 gr gave me 2950 from a 24". Iv since switched to RL 23 and in lapua brass 53.5gr at 3000 fps is giving great accuracy and very good brass life with both the 140 EH and the 143 ELDX. RL 26 is supposed to be very good but apparently a little more temp sensitive than RL23.
You should be able to get to 2900 with your 20" barrel ok.

Oh yeah, 2209 a bit fast burning then.
That 2225 and rl23 sound good. I've got some 2217 which might also go ok then.

The barrel is 26inch and not on the tikka yet. I was wondering about the merits of shortening it with a can or running it bare at 26 or 24inch

If you have 2217 that would defiantly be worth a try. I have an aversion to abbreviated barrels but its a personal choice. If you want velocity its a lot easier on everything with more barrel length.

Yes, thanks @sneeze I'm of the same opinion. I would rather do 2900 easy than be standing on it to achieve piss all over the 260.

Superformance would balance spot on with the case capacity

    I run 55 gr of 2217 behind a 143 eldx and get 2850 out of a 24 inch barrel.
Did run 58 gr of 2225 for a while and pushed 140 Berger’s close to 3000.

I thought superformance looked good on the burn rate chart. Does it have more load density than the stick powders?

I was running 2217 in my 20" getting 2800 from 130grn Nosler some years back then I sold it.
I can get the same speed from a 18" and 20" .260 with less powder so that's the way I went.

You're a guru tho bro and your results are exceptional.
    I'm getting ~2700 from a 22" 260 and am predicting ~2900 from a 24" tube on this one.

I haVe been wondering what to do with my rem mags. I think one will go and the other will get chopped to 20" and wear a can.

It's great powder in many cases just watch it in summer time if you are at the top end as it is sensitive to temp.
RL26 is bloody good as well you just need to use a long drop tube.
