    7mm Rem Mag Recipe

    Hi there,
Just wondering what others "go to" load is for the 7mm Rem Mag?
Just starting to reload for this and was interested in what others suggest.
Shooting a Sako A7 with 24 inch barrel 1:9.5 twist.
    TIA

The hardest thing is finding components at the moment.
    I load RL26 and 180 ELDM

    Yup totally agree,

    Powders:

Rl26-forget about it may as well not exist
    ADI 2225/Retumbo ^^^^^as above^^^^
ADI 2217/H1000- almost as rare but possibly new stock arriving in the next month, if you haven't pre ordered any you possibly may not get any either.

    Projectiles:

Hornandy 162ELDM's are a very reliable round and again due to supply demands they are scarce but if you hunt around you should be able to get some.
They are pretty easy to get shooting and generally speaking most rifles seem to have a sweet spot around 2900-3000fps give or take.
Just work up from book minimum loads

    Primers;

Personal preference but cci or federal are usually pretty reliable but again also in short supply.

    Brass:

Again this is personal preference but Norma is good if not Remington then Winchester,
Stay away from Hornandy as in this cal it seems to fail after 1 or 2 reloads.

Your biggest limitation in the a7 is the relatively short mag length compared to your chamber, but that shouldn't stop you from loading some deadly accurate ammo, but I think in reality your mag won't be long enough to accommodate 180gn pills.

Good luck k I love my rem mag it's devastating

+1 for powder selection as above. Do you have powder already? If not and you can’t find the above you could look at RL23 or the older 22 which are similar burn rate to 2217. Also N560, spendy but great powder. And for pills other than Hornady the Berger 168VLDs or 180s would excellent choice. If you wanting to shoot animals at ranges 500 yds or less I’d also recommend 160gn or 150gn Partitions

    67 grains of RE26 pushing 180 ELD-Ms for me gives 2840 fps.
H1000/2217 would be good too as Chainsaw says. RE22 is pretty temp sensitive but it’s a case of using what you can find at the moment. 2225 goes well too.

haven't heard of any issues with other calibers, but know of 2 people directly that have had case neck splits on 2nd reload, not hot loads either, 1 was reloaded factory brass and the other was virgin brass.

RL22 has reputation of being temp sensitive but bear in mind that’s often based on US conditions, 90F+ in summer and -20 in winter. In NZ conditions as long as you don’t do your load dev at high or low extremes it’s quite useable. I’ve used it a bit in 280ai with load dev done at 15 - 20C and hunting at 4-5C up to maybe 20C and not seen any issues. RL22 Now superseded by RL23 which is much more temp stable. With these slightly faster powders you’d be best to focus on lighter pills under 160gn.

I have two loadings using the same sight in, the first is 162 gr ELDX with 71 grs AR 2225 for 2948 fps. The second is the 175 gr Noslar LRAB with 65.8 grs of RL 26 for 2899 fps AV.
Not a lot of help as all those components are scarce as hens teeth at the moment.

I’m guessing it’s all going to depend what you can get supply on at the moment. My old load was 63.5gr IMR4831 with the 162 ELD-X at 30 thou jump (Tikka 24” barrel). Current load after being shortened to 21” is 67.5gr Rel 23 (build up to this from a few gr lower with caution) using same pill and jump for same speed as old load. Anything 2217, 2225, IMR4831, Rel 23, Rel 26 etc etc is all worth a go.

    Thanks guys
    A few things to consider
I have some factory ammo...hornady....to work through then work up a load.
Rifle shoots well with federal and just sighted in for 162 sst superperformance factory loads for a trip next week
After that will be looking to reload if I can get the bits n bobs

RL19 at 64, RL22 at 67, RL 25 at 70 grains all give ~2950 to 3000 fps with a 160/162 gn pill if you can find them and will produce accurate loads.
