    7mm RM Load for Tikka T3 with ADI 2217 and 162g ELD-M

Have scored a cheap PBC turret on EBay for my Swaro Z5 that is set up for a Hornady ELD-X 162g at 2975fps. I am not completely confident in my chronograph so would be keen to hear opinions on what load of 2217 will get this velocity in a T3 with factory original barrel. Am guessing 70.5g. Does the brand of brass affect velocity at a given charge weight (am using Hornady). Thx in advance.

You will be close, usually 71-72gr 2217 is the go to load for 162 a-max and 168 berger. The brand of brass can have an effect, but it is hard to predict. Heavier brass is said to have less internal case capacity, so can give higher pressures/velocity.

are you running factory ammo or hand loads ? Assume your tikka is 24in bbl ? then ~3000 fps is what you'd expect. If your chrony is placed 15 - 20 ft from muzzle then add ~15fps, so your 2975 measured would be around 2990 at muzzle.
    I find 2225 or RL25 better for 7mmRM

I get 2955 fps with 65 grs of AR2213 SC ( over book Max but good in my rifle a Mod 700) barrel is 24 inch. Could try that load but work up to that charge weight. That is with a 162 gr A Max.

Are you suggesting 2225 for speed or accuracy? I have had ok but not exceptional groups from 2217.

Both, loading for two different rifles they both hated 2217, so changed one is running 72gr the other 74.5 mag length, make sure you work up your own loads though, groups are tight, 3050fps and smashes the 680y gong so must be all good👍

rossm-96 G'day mate what length is your barrel and what do you want accuracy or average accuracy and good velocity ?
Mate I run a sako roughtech range 7mm rem mag 26'' barrel
I find ar2213 good for bullet weight up to 150gr's or there abouts ar2217 from there to 168gr vld's anything over 168gr ar2225
If you want velocity some blokes I know use rl22 and rl25 and get good velocity like loads worked up to 3100fps with 162eld-x
    I run 162gr eld-m and eld-x @ 2860fps with 67gr ar2217 / cci 250 mag primers the 168gr berger vld with 69gr ar2217 / cci 250 mag
    primers for 2950fps all are .2-.4 moa @ 100yds
The rifle has a 1-9.5 twist barrel
I have tried many primers but in my rifle ar2217 prefers the cci 250 mag primers and gives very fine accuracy
I find that a lot of sako's and tikka's around here like light loads for accuracy and some other brands of rifle like a little hotter loads
I also use a sako 85 22-250 and it likes light loads of 31.6 benchmark 2 for 3434fps and its deadly accurate
Hope this info helps a little
    cheers

Thx Rigga. Barrel is a standard Tikka 620mm. I am trying to get an accurate load that shoots a 162g eld-x at about 2975fps to match my Swarovski PBC turret. Had not thought of changing the primers.

Anyway have loaded up some rounds with 2225. Will report back on the results once I get to the range.

PS; Also have a Sako 85 22-250 which shoots well with 2208. Might try the bm2 load.

Yeah rossm-96 I have heard that 2208 was ok in 22-250 but I had my load and didn't bother going any further
My son has a 22-250 in Ruger 26'' barrel and uses 2209 and very accurate
I've found vld's the most accurate in 7mm then eld-m then eld-x but all within the .5 range but temperature will affect the eld-x more if the
ammo is slightly warm the group will move out to .7 at so
The vld in my rifle likes to be in the lands for best accuracy
I found that changing primers does benefit accuracy as much as anything else when it came to fine tuning a load
Hope ya find a load and hope it doesn't cost too much to do so
    cheers

By the way mate I didn't mention that all the eld-m and x like to be as close to the lands as possible in my rifle
but not touching totally different to the vld's that like being in the lands enough not to stick

Thx Rigga. Loaded up a handful of 162g eld’s with 72.5g and 73g of 2225, using federal magnum primers. Fired one shot to foul and then 2 of each load. Both 2 shot groups were about .6 to .7moa which is about as good as I can shoot. Early days but looking promising. Velocity of the 73g load was 2760-ish which suits my PBC turret perfectly. Thx for all the advice everyone!
