Barrel length is important to make subs quite, longer is better

Bigger calibres work better terminally, but harder to make "silent"

Purpose built mono subsonic projectiles offer more aggressive & consistent terminal performance than cup & core

Crimping is important/imperative with subsonic loads

I crimp for 308 but the 300BLK doesn’t need it.

    Whats suppressor’s are everyone using?

I am using a purpose built eccentric over barrel suppressor on 3” dia tube
450 long is super quiet first one was 300 long but didn’t have enough baffles in front
To work the best with subs vs bore diameter

Other option would be somehting you can add to and chuck a few extra baffles into
If going the dedicated sub route

Definitely haven't needed to crimp any of my rounds. There's heaps of neck tension what with it being 338 bullets shoved right into the neck - they ain't budging. Powder's burning well and getting great ES/SD's.

I'm using an A-Tec MH2 on mine. @NCGNSMITH, I think I was the customer that passed through your place. Blue chassis?

Any chance of some photo's and a bit more detail on your suppressor? I was talking to Ian from Hardy's a while back who runs an 8.6 blk - he made a custom suppressor for his.

    Hi
I can give rough specs but not at point I want to post pictures

    450mm long
    3” dia
    480 grams
250mm muzzle forward in current configuration 8 baffles 2
    Swirl baffles
QD muzzle brake system to remove in couple seconds
At the moment the rear bush is a second mounting system/lock stays on
    Barrel when suppressor removed
When fitted suppressor sits 25mm above barrel centreline with a 20mm
    Internal Isolator tube
The downside is the current cost
12 plus hours and a serious chunk of alloy with a handful of titanium go into
    them
It was more of a wonder if I can make it project

Resurrecting this thread to see if there's been any developments from the contributors to date. @Friwi in particular a year after he got the brass.

I've watched pretty much all the available content on this cartridge. The 1:3" twist combined with copper "petal-peeler" projectiles is delivering some unreal wound channels in medium and heavy game, at subsonic velocities. The Maker and Gorilla projectiles in particular.

Aside from projectile cost / availability and sourcing barrels, I can't really see any fatal flaws as a dedicated subsonic hunting rifle - these ultra-fast spinning sharp edged nightmares are freakin' devastating.

    Any updates?

i know its not a blkout, but i have a 338fed, supersoni 175G cutting edge maximus at 2675fps, and a 280gr peregrine ( look just like maker projectiles coming out ) @ 1000fps, I was hitting deer @230m over the weekend, shoulder shot, absolutly destroying them.

I've got a hankering. It does look better than 300BLK in term of subsonic performance on game animals. I'm hoping it's everything 300BLK was promised to be, but we will see. I'd want it to go mainstream in NZ with factory ammunition available before I parted with money.

    It's an interesting one...

Spin drift couldn't be ignored. On most centrefires it's a couple of clicks at most out to 1000m. But with the 8.6 you'd clean miss a target at 400m unless dialing or holding for it.

I could swear that if the wind was coming from the right, the bullet would climb up through it. And from the left, it would go downwards. Magnus effect? Because even a slight change in wind direction or strength seemed to create significant changes in both horizontal and elevation.

It was more than I could get ballistic calculators to give a good solution for. It felt like it was really past the limits of the known physics of bullet flight that they could handle.

800m was as far as I managed to take subs but only on a perfectly calm day.

Well the good news is I'd be using it is a very short lightweight carbine in the regen native, so range not a problem. In that environment I think the longest shot I've ever taken (Aimpoint red dot) was 135m. Most are about 50-60m.

Lots of great info thanks mate (we had a phone chat) and lots of food for thought. The key thing for me is to see one of these 8.6 actually shooting lots of deer - theres lots of chat out there but not much actual hunting footage.
