    AR CYCLING PROBLEM

    Hi guys,

I'm running a AR in 300BLK in 16", hardy AR10 can, carbine gas system and carbine buffer with an adjustable gas block, I'm running super loads fine but I have just loaded some 220SMK over 9.1 grains of AR2205, these aren't fully cycling with the gas block adjusted all the way open.

    What are my options???

    Cheers

    Rob

Drilling the gas port wider. Perhaps try another powder first. Pistol gas system is really what you want.

    Hi Rob,

I had a similar issue, 125 BT supers with AR2205 18.6 gr were sweet but 2205 didn't seem to cycle well enough in my sub load, short stroke and no carrier lock back. So I tried Vahtavouri N110 9 gr with 240 gr SMK as my sub load and that cycles very well. The barrel is 12 inches long and also suppressed but you may have different results.

    Cheers

It has a hardy can on it.
I don't really want to change powders if I don't have to!
It is over gassed for my supers now and under gassed for the subs!

A common problem with carbine gas systems on blackouts.

I hate to say it but I think your going to have to play around with powders

Cool as guys, thanks for the responses, looks like I will need to try a new powder for subs.
Anyone willing to part with a small amount of vihtavouri N110 t try before I buy a container???

You can also try taking all the weights out of the recoil buffer.
10MRT shooters do it 60 times, in two directions and at two speeds.

I'd make sure I had a spare first, as that's not reversible. I have to swap buffers between subs and supers. That said, I'm now running 240 SMK subs and the extra 20 grains may mean I can run with the weights back in, haven't checked.

Just finished trying a couple of different buffer springs and a buffer without weights, I took my gas block of and made sure it was lined up properly and was adjusted all the way open. I can get it to fully eject a spent case but still can't get it to pick up another. Looks like I need to pull 95 loaded projectiles!!! And try some N110, anybody got 100 grains I can have to try?

    Or any other suggestions?

    Cheers

    Rob

Pull your gas block off and measure your gas port diameter. Mine is at 2.3mm I think it was at 2.0mm when I started working on the cycling issue and just ran a 2.3 mm drill with a bit of cutting lube carefully through. I had a sleeve on the drill to stop it going into the other side of the bore.

Assumimg you have a full auto carrier, i would try a lighter one. I built my race gun around a lighter carrier. Had the gas port drilled to just function on a heavy carrier, it would spit my handloads out and only just trip the bho by grabbing the carrier, not the bolt head. It wouldnt pick the next round up when doing this. Problem was fixed with an ar15 carrier (slightly lower mass than full auto carrier) but it was running on the ragged edge of reliability. I put my intended JP low mass carrier in to give it even more lee way and found i even had enough room to adjust my gas down some.

So, try shedding some carrier weight as well as the buffer. This isnt going to help you much when swapping between supers and subs. In fact ignore all i have written and play with powders instead!

Cheers anyway Townley, I was thinking of milling a bit off the carrier, I will see if I can get some different powder to work first!

Before you try milling, maybe someone could lend you a ar15 carrier to try
