Can you explain??

I went target shooting last weekend and fired 30 rounds from my .22mag (all from the same new packet), 8 of the casings have cracks in them and two were so bad that they wouldn't eject from the chamber. Does anybody know what's going on?

I don't know really but at a guess I would say to much pressure?

happens with my 17hmr sometimes, i have narrowed it down to just being a weaker batch of brass. Some packs of ammo do it more than others.

Check the necks of all the unfired ones - you may find cracks already
I had that with one packet of 7x64

Brass has cracked and burnt through during firing,

Could be many things

Oversize chamber

Cracks in the brass during manufacture

Brittle work hardened brass

Too much pressure

or all of the above.

I've seen this in PMC brass a few times over the years.

I had the same out of some 9mm norinco stuff i was given a while ago. I would love to know what caused it also.

I'm hoping its just the ammunition and not my rifle itself. I have a friend who's had the same problem after he got a suppressor fitted to his rifle, he figured out that his barrel wasn't quite set properly in the stock. Long story short he got it reset and all is now fine and he hasn't had the same problem.
But for me, I got my suppressor fitted quite a few packs of ammo ago, so I think its just the pack of ammo.
Thoughts?

Same here with the 17 hmr in both rifles I've owned, must be ammo

I have a suppressed .22 mag I've not experienced this. Ammo seems likely. Try another brand

When you extract them from the chamber, if the split is in the same place each time, relative to chamber, then it's likely to be a chamber problem and it will get worse as the flame erosion continues in that area. If it's a random position each time, it's the brass.

Either way, it's not doing your rifle any good, ditch the ammo and get another brand.

It looks like ammo to me but I would also check that you dont have any lube or oil in the breech area. case must be clean and oil free. Just a thought

+1 check the relative position of the firing pin strike & split in the case.

If they line up get the chamber checked, pronto.

As others have said, you won't do the rifle any favours by continuing to use that ammo.
