No, and likely not accurate enough. Ideally a socket and thermocouple in through the side of the pan into the molten puddle would give you the most reliable reading - I've used a laser in the past and found them quite rubbish especially on gas rings as the melt source. The laser tends to get confused and end up trying to read the heat coming off everything as it's just too radiant with too much convecting heat to get a decent IR ping of the surface of the metal.
Only problem... raining outside so I can't fire up the melter
