Cost of primers.

We seem to be stuck on a wheel of component shortages. Or eye watering increases.
Sometimes it's all components together,, in 40 plus years of reloading, I have learnt to get what I can when I can. If you shoot high volume you have to try and keep a year ahead. I see primers are trending down (to my mind) and projectiles are trending up. Brass became unobtainable but is available again, but I think it's price will continue to rise steadily. Powder stocks should stabilize and their price will trend with shipping fees, that are increasing for now.The US reloader is paying less than we do for European product, we need to get ahead of that. But we are a tiny market.

I understand that some of the HUNTS courses go near the Forgotten Highway for their training using goats as a starter - doing the world a favour getting rid of them

$139 for 1000 doesn't seem so bad now.

Primers under $200 in AU would be a sight for sore eyes.

In 2018 I paid $45

I recently paid $30 for 150 Fiocchi, so $200 per 1000. Thought that was reasonable, although my day is now so I can't complain about the good old days.
The cost of a shipping container is still mental. It hasn't recovered from Covid days. It doesn't help that there's a shortest of water in Panama reducing ship movements through the distant canal.

Also, primers can't travel with some other DG cargos so get offloaded as usually a 1- or 2-can shipment at most, where the other DG cargos can be in the 10's of containers so get priority. If they are offloaded they have to have special treatment and be segregated on the wharf they are offloaded at, which is expensive too. It's an all-round ball ache.

I wonder what the limit for primers in a container are, one TEU would see us through for a year, it could be made up from different suppliers. But i suspect that the total allowable quantity in a box is pretty light.
@Oldbloke do Thales make other bits besides powder or import them, I know they have a line of brass but not sure if thats made in Au or elsewhere.

Primers are sourced
Most bullets sourced too I think

Long time since I was there.


I'd guess shipping container would only be about 50% full.
It would vary depending on the explosive class. 1.1 would be different to 1.3 for example.
