I have a south african brand that work well. they seemed to be a good balance of price and quality to me
I have two both with those little button battery's, I bought them to replace an old cheap one I had, it worked fine but the battery was always flat when I wanted to use it, guess what, same problem with these two.
I bought a Tolsen and a cheaper one to see how they compare, not much in it to be fair but always a flat battery and I do make sure they are off after use.
So after looking at this thread I liked the look of the Shahe callipers with the 2032 batt and have ordered one hoping for better battery life.

Yes my Insize one uses a 2032 battery, lasts for years, my other cheap one works just as well but LR44 battery needs replacing lot more often. But at least it lives inside and not far from the spare battery drawer... providingt the kids haven't pinched them all...Quote:

I have Mitutoyo Digital, Insize Digital, Brown and Sharpe (Dial, my favourite for a lot of tasks) and an ancient NSK (Vernier, struggle to read this now).
I also have a cheap Chinese 12" that has a flat battery (LR44, ridiculous in a large caliper) every time I go to use it. Changing the battery requires removing tiny screw holding the battery cover, grrr.
Starrett used to be up there as well for quality with the Yanks favouring them over Miitutoyo. Japanese versus made in the US of A I think, except Starrett has now changed ownership and all now made in China.
My Insize has Imperial, Metric and fractions. The fractions is sometimes useful.
One test I do on calipers is to open them to say mid way, note the reading, zero the reading, close and they should read minus the value noted. I had one caliper (not Mit or Insize) that I returned due to failing this test.
Always wipe the faces and check zero before measuring.
I cant read my original Mitutoyo callipers now, even with reading glasses, its just a blur.
I have and use mitutoyo calipers and micrometers for work, but I probably wouldn't buy the black and yellow Mitutoyos (diesel mechanic, all kinds of harsh chemicals and dusty environmental factors). The coolant proof ones have really served me well, over ten years of use and very reliable. Granted they are *very* pricey for the home user but accuracy is never in question. I'd definitely go with the insize ones for the budget casual use option.
I just bought an Insize 1108 because of this thread. My cheap caliper was repeatable, and accurate (confirmed with coins etc) but there is always that doubt when I'm trying to be as meticulous as possible and still not getting the results at the range that everyone else seems to achieve
