I do just always have , im picking maybe the primer sits better and ignites well running over a smooth surface rather than etched up.... thats not fact just my thinking
How are you cleaning them out?

Yes, either hand tool or stainless pin media, similar reasoning to Kelton.
Basically ensures consistency.
Edit to add: I’m sure there is not a measurable gain in doing so, just appeals to me to do so.
Wet tumble in pins, everything is clean then.
Yes I always clean them, Lyman pocket cleaning tool. Its not a hard job so I do it every time. I haven't tested if it has any affect on accuracy but who cares its easy to do, so I do it.
Only after every third reload or so. Lee tool.
Outlander do you notice any misfires or anything during 2nd and 3rd load?
I soaked my brass in vinegar/water mix or lemon juice/water the other day it cleaned the brass up pretty good , leave them to soak over night primer pockets where much better , to dry them put them in the oven on 100 degrees for half hour .

Always do, only takes a few seconds and keeps the pockets clear of burn residue. Must help I would think.

I never used to, but when I changed to ss pin tumbling to clean the brass I deprime before tumbling so that the primer pocket and flash hole get cleaned. Cant say that I have noticed any difference in performance but it does make me smile every time pull the brass out even after years of doing it this way and its no extra work.
White Tail carbide cutter. Don't think it makes any difference but I've always done it and I'm not going change now after 46 years of reloading.

I expect it makes bugger all difference, but ensures a flat surface and takes about 3seconds per case.

I pop all the expended primers out with the Frankford Arsenal hand tool so that way when they go in the wet tumbler with pins, the primer pockets get cleaned.
I see clean brass as a way of resetting everything to zero, hence there is no junk in the primer pocket that could cause a misfire or seating issues.
it is called covering your butt so things don,t go wrong just like wiping your butt it's a good habit no skid marks
the other plus is you tend to pick up other things that go wrong with your brass in the process like a blocked flash hole for instance so I see it as a good habit to have
Every time. Lyman hand tool for me. I want to know that my primers are seated to the same depth each time. That’s all I do to clean my brass.
I don’t even clean the inside of the necks as I have a theory that powder residue helps with consistent release of projectiles. It certainly doesn’t have a negative impact on accuracy.
Shiny cases don’t add anything to my shooting.
I always clean , remember your reloading the case , so why not the little prime, give that a good clean as well, I won a bet a few years ago that I could reload the primers as well . :cool: Tight wad.

I thought this thread would go the way of cleaning primer pockets. Only Tentman owned up to not cleaning them and Gigar only cleaned them one time out of three. There have been a few tests in the US that failed to find any benefit from cleaning primer pockets (it takes many rounds for a definitive result) Bench rest shooters in the US don't usually clean them. They also don't full length size their cases or even size them at all. I can't imagine them putting their precious cases in a tumbler either. Do I clean my primer pockets? Yes I do because I like to. If you like cleaning them too go for it. Just don't pretend that it makes any difference. I use a small screwdriver. I have tried other tools but always gone back to the screwdriver.

Many years ago my mentor told me to clean the primer pockets so I do. I use a RCBS primer pocket cleaning SS brush which works well. If you have ever rubbed the dust that comes out of spent primers between your thumb and finger you will know that it is very abrasive. This isn't surprising as ground glass is added into the primer compound.
I am just now in the process of not cleaning pockets, just to see what diff it makes.
Its gonna take a while to find out though, not muchee bang bang at the mo.
