Thread: ejector marks

Hi Guys

Just back from the range and have a question.

I was firing 150 Hornady SST factory ammo and was for the first time in 70 rounds getting ejector marks on the cartridge head, bolt just a little sticky. Grouping bloody good! Tiny pieces of brass on the end of the bolt as well.

It was a little warmer today, would that explain the extra pressure?

There was a very experienced reloader, he said fine to use ammo as is but not to use the cases for reloading, thoughts please.

I know my chamber is tight, I have even had trouble closing the bolt on another batch of same ammo, does a tight chamber also create extra pressure?

Pressure is too high for your rifle

Had the same issue with my Sako 85 in .270 running Hornady superformance 140gn sst. Didnt group and brass being taken off the head as well. They are hot rounds and according to a reloader and gun shop worker at the range, a lot of guns don't work well with them. At least its grouping.

Yes pressure too high..i would be looking for a new load if it were me

What cal out of interest , just had a 25/06 brought into me for the same reason

calibre is .308

I have checked the other cases, all from the same batch and no marks on previous firings. I guess it was just real close and the warmth on the day put them over the edge. Nothing else has changed.

I will be developing a load as I am turning to the dark side of reloading so looking forward to that.

Factory feds do that in mine.
Some of the brass has been reloaded 7 or 8 times.
In this case its just soft brass not over pressure.

What brass is it?

The brass is Hornady match, talking about factory ammo. 150 sst superformance.

I posted it here in reloading as I want to reload the brass, I also figured reloaders may have a bit more experience with ejector marks.

I have a similar problem and have had for a long time.Although the primers are looking ok ,not too flattend and not too crated.
But I am always seeing ejecter marks and some times the bolt can be a little sticky but not all of the time.New Lapua brass,first loading. For some reason there is noticable marks ( shaving's ) from around the rim of the case also and minute specks of brass left on the bolt face.
The rounds are very accurate.I just cant work out what's causing these things.
Any ideas?

Sounds like your load is a bit hot.

Did you size the brass first?are any of them tight to close the bolt?
