Just wanted to ask when you get a new brass and doing a load development.
Do you size your new brass and use this size as a standart or do you shoot a new brass to fire form it and then just bumb the shoulder by 3 to 1 though and use this size as standart?
Depends on the brand of your brass.
I bought some new Lapua Palma Brass for my son's new FTR rifle.
Did load development with the virgin brass.
Loaded virgin brass for him to shoot at the NRANZ Nationals.
He won the FTR Grand Aggregate and finished 3rd in class.
The Lapua Palma brass was simply primed, loaded with powder and projectile.
No preparation, no special treatment.
After being shot it rec'd my usual treatment.
Deprimed and full length sized.
Ultrasonic cleaned.
Oven dried, air cooled.
Load, shoot, repeat.
One can do a lot more work, measuring, weighing, trimming - but will it make a difference.
The biggest source of error is the wind and the nut behind the bolt.
I expect most new brass should be ready to roll but, I have had a considerable struggle with a new rifle that has a tight chamber. For load development it has been another box I have had to tick off to methodically work through so from here on I will always FL sized all brass regardless just to be sure. I have also found during this process the Wilson FL bushing die is without a doubt the best die available and I will use one where possible across every rifle I load for.
I size all new brass. Especially when some cases come with damaged necks and that.
But in saying that I never sized the Nosler match brass I got. And that didn't shoot any better than the Lake City or Denver brass I had.
I now small base size the cases I have, but each to their own I guess.

I have a 30-06 Parker Hale and bought some new unfixed Hornady brass, have had to full length resize the lot, bolt won’t go within 5 mm of starting to close. Normally with new brass I have just loaded with Trailboss and fireformed, but not this lot. The opposite with my 284, Winchester brass fitted no problem, moral of the story check before loading and getting to the range with something you can’t use.
