Loading for .300BLK

Some of our Aussie members may have seen some of this .300BLK load development on the Aussie forum but I have done lots more development since then and will add the more recent stuff here too.

A sunny afternoon and a a few hours to experiment I decided to load up some .300 AAC BLK cast bullets that Ive been wanting to test on paper..
I have some 245gr and some 155gr cast bullets that I wanted to try with and without gas checks to see if the rebated "boat tail" like shape or a flat base would make any difference to group size. There is no real need to fit a gas check as they are only loaded at subsonic speeds.

The test platform is a Remington 700 Tactical AAC-SD .300 Black out

The rifle will shoot half MOA with 240gr SMK subsonic loads but the projectiles are a little pricey so I save them for hunting rather than range work.
It also shoots 125gr Nosler ballistic tips at 2320fps which group around an inch at 100y.

What I wanted was a cheaper subsonic bullet alternative to use around my property on rabbits and general plinking as it is a rifle I really like to shoot ..

I started off with the 245gr cast bullets from Robert which looks like a “perfect moulds” mould? I loaded them with several powders such as AR2205, AP 50, AP70 and Trail Boss but got the best (I use that word loosely) groups with 8.3gr of Hodgdon H110 both with and without gas checks fitted shooting an average of 1020fps.. this is the result at 100 yards.

Fairly average results at best and really inconclusive to whether the gas check makes any difference to ballistics.

Next up I loaded some 155gr Lee Spitzers that I cast and shoot in a custom big bore PCP air rifle. The twist rate at 1-7" is too fast for these lightweights but I thought I give them a try anyway.. I loaded them with 8.5gr of AR2205 to 1050fps and they are VERY quiet!

They are a very low pressure round with that powder and there was a lot of sooty black blow by on the spent case necks..
However these shot far better than the heavy weight bullets and could be fine tuned with a faster pistol powder to bring the pressure up a touch.

Besides the flyer in non gas checked bullets the group would have been about an inch.
I was very happy to see a group of 3/4" from the gas checked bullets and it is defiantly a contender as a cheap plinking bullet! I will test it further with other powders and at longer ranges very soon. I have a large flock of Canadian geese that frequent a field about 250 yards from my shooting bench so it would be great if these silent lightweights hold stability to that range..

The mould is the 90385 Lee double cavity 7.62x39 .312 " 155gr bullet that I cast in pure lead and size to .308" the listed B.C is .268

I use pure lead for casting my sub bullets as its natural slippery properties and the lack of tin/antimony actually makes for less fouling. As a subsonic bullet it has no need to be hard. I also found sizing them to .308” instead of .309” also got better groups. I found flaring the case mout lightly before seating gave less bullet damage when seating and no shaved lead rings in my throat, I also use a light roll crimp to lock them into the case which gives much better velocity consistencies.

A little more testing with some IMR Trail boss powder and the 155gr bullets over the chrony and had two loads to try, 6.0gr of T/B gets me 995fps and 6.5gr of T/B gets me 1020fps but its an absolute max load and borderline compressed which I find T/B doesnt like that much.. I have my money on the 6.0gr load.
It is a higher pressure load than the AR2205 loads I tested as it shows a flatter primer and no sooty "blow by" on the brass when extracted. I do like how clean T/B burns..

It is a super quiet load and shoots 3/4 moa with the 2205 but I would be very happy if I can match that with the T/B without the sooty blow by low pressure issues of 2205.

I decided to scrap the compressed 6.5gr T/B loads after putting a few more over the chrony, they showed large fluctuations in velocity as I expected they would.. Trail boss does not like compressed loads.

The 6.0gr of T/B felt real good to shoot but the group really fell apart with this powder.. 10 shots in just over 5" on paper!
However the Chrony results were very good with only a 18fps max spread over 10 shots.

I think I will put up with the sooty low pressure load of 2205 as it shoots extremely well!

Wanting to go a bit heavier than the 155gr cast bullet as my plinker I purchased this NOE spitzer 3 cavity mould to try and was impressed with the results.

The bullets are pure lead sized to .308 like the others and gas checked which puts them right on 210gr.
They are a nice long bullet like the 240gr SMK so should perform well on pests too.

Loaded with 8.6gr of 2205 and a light crimp puts them at 1020fps AV and they shoot great. almost as good as the SMKs.

Unfortunately I didnt have any of the cast bullets loaded when I saw this critter out in the paddock.
With a quick drop check on my strelok app I took this hare at 172yds off my BBQ table with a 240gr SMK subsonic.
After I shot I thought Id missed it and it ducked down in the long grass.. I figured I would have seen it dancing if it took the hit so jumped the fence and stalked up slowly ready to take another shot. when I got closer I saw it wasnt going anywhere. The bullet had passed through just behind its eye :thumbsup:

Awesome write up mate! Absolutely love the 300AAC! I've ditched all the cabinet content and just use the 300 now, don't see myself ever using anything else. Its such a versatile round with the Subs and Supers, it meets all my needs and uses.

Am yet to delve into the depths of reloading as yet, am using the Hornady SubX rounds and the Hornady American hollow points for all my hunting purposes. Am stoked with both thus far!

Thank you, I have cleared out my collection quite a few times over the years and been left with just the BLK or whisper as it was.. eventually I ventured into more cals again until the safe was overflowing again.
Like you say it is a very versatile cal that can do mos things.

Supersonic load development up next

Theres no short answer to that question. How far can you shoot? The 240gr SMK leaving the barrel at 1040fps is still doing 820fps at 1000yds.. if your good enough to lob one into the scone of a deer at those ranges then 1000y is the answer.
Most people who hunt with subs shoot inside 250yds and aim for the boiler room but if you are a head or neck shooter and can master the subsonic bullets rainbow trajectory then it can be pushed much further.

.300BLK is a very versatile caliber that suits many roles. It can be loaded with any 30cal projectile from the 85gr pistol to the huge 250gr.
In its subsonic role, the 240gr SMK tumbling is equivalent to 7 times caliber expansion! These high BC projectiles retain energy as well as sub MOA accuracy out to 200y. While the bullet leaves the muzzle at approx 1040 fps, at 100 yards it loses only 3%, travelling at 1011fps & at 200 yards it still keeps on motoring with a solid 984fps.
With subsonic velocity and best bullet accuracy fixed below 1050 fps, terminal energy can only be increased by increasing bullet weight The longer and heavier bullet is the most stable of all bullets in the fast twist 300BLK barrels and offers more weight and downrange energy. The tumbling of these long heavy projectiles immediately after impact is a major part of the subsonic concept, disregarded or misunderstood by many. While they are stable in flight, even a cardboard box target clearly shows the tendency of these bullets to tumble after impact, A clean round entrance hole on the front side of the box but exit with elongated holes on the back of the box, thus creating wounds far in excess of their "paper" ballistics and deadly on shoulder shot game out to about 250yds. The huge noise reduction factor over conventional ammunition (roughly 90% less noise) is bound to expand the hunting applications of the subsonic rifle

@Wingman, when you measure your groups, I notice your calipers are set over the centres of the two furthest holes of each group, rather than the outside edges.

Is this technically/officially the more accurate way to measure a grouping?

If you take a 308 and shoot a group of one, and measure the outside of the holes (there's only one) you'll get a measurement of approx 0.3". Does this mean you have shot a 0.3moa group? Of course not ;)

Don't see how it can be a group unless it has multiple personality issues...:D

:DI guess its just that Im old school and it was the way I learned through military shooting comps.
All international benchrest competition was measured "CTC" (center to center) but changed many years ago which is why the old world record figures shot with .22PCP and 6mmBR will never be beaten due to the new way of measuring group sizes.

I had mixed results with the 240 SMk
, with not immediate kills on preys from rabbit and hare to goats. The tumbling is not consistent on goats ,sometime penciling through and having to finish them with a second round.
And they make massive ricochets if hitting a hard surface at the proper angle even after going through an animal.
I then switched to hornady 170 gr fbfp . Which I modified with an hollow point as per an old article from Greg Duley.
They were killing a bit better but still not very conclusive with a few animal to finish off.
As soon as I switched to the 151gr hp cast from Robert, that was a different story, way better expansion, quicker kills and less dangerous ricochets. Three times now I have witnessed two goats standing next to each other being killed by 1 bullet ( twice by a mate at 30 m and 90 meters and once by me at 150 m).
I have started to used the 190 gr sub x from hornady, but their load is a little bit inconsistent and I have only tried it on one goat so far.

My conclusion from my limited experience is that any weight above 150 gr produces energy which is wasted once the bullet passes through the animal, the noise is more important and so are the ricochets.

@Wingman is that the factory Remmy barrel? I take it that its not the standard 700 AAC? Cheers, pretty good accuracy with the 240 SMK's ive heard subs can be fussy things

@ Friwi I totally agree mate, goats are very light bodied and I have had many pass throughs with even high velocity rounds.. if you dont hit bone results can be disappointing.
I stopped body shots many years ago as the head is no smaller kill zone as the chest vitals.
The 300gr .338 whisper I had was a different story.. I saw many goats body shot and their legs just went out from under them and that was it. A lot more energy dumped with that one I suspect and the longer bullet was less likely to pass through even on lightly built goats.

I have shot many of the lighter HPs including Roberts 150gr HP and some of my own custom mould lighter 85gr and 105gr HPs with great results on rabbits/hares but have not put them on goats as Im favouring the .223AI at the mo with longer range work.

Yes Std Rem700 AAC Tactical with the factory 16" 1-7" twist 5R rifled barrel. To be honest its not the most accurate .300 BLK/Whisper Ive owned, the 1-8 twist 17" long Shillens shot way better and was better with the lighter 125gr supers as well. 1-7" is too fast for the BLK in my opinion, fine for the 12" pistol AR15s but limited by pressure for the longer rifle barrels with high velocity loads.

Ive used JD Jone's original 240gr recipe since the beginning of this cal and it has shot the best in every .300 Ive owned (12) regardless of barrel length and twist.
Start with 9.3gr or H110 behind a 240gr SMK. Tune to 1020fps from there. if that doesnt get you inside an inch at 100y with 5 shots nothing will.

Cheers for that info. Im going to put together a 300 BLK and im trying to decide between just buying a Remmy or getting a 700 or howa action and chucking a TF 1-8 suppressor barrel on. If I can get a donor action cheap enough im guessing it would be about the same cost all up.

A cobber of mine just got a Ruger American 300BLK (secondhand for $700) and it shoots really well, you'd be hard pressed to build anything for that money (even new they are only $900)

Yip even a custom barrel job will cost you most of that.. best to find something factory made and customize to your taste

So with two great shooting subsonic loads sorted I moved my focus to a supersonic load.

Back when I first started out in this cal (.300 Whisper) the go to hot round was the 125gr Nosler ballistic tip. I got 2450fps from a 1-8" twist 17" tube and they were bullet on bullet accurate at 100y. I still have a box of 50 of those loads loaded up but they have never been as accurate in the 1-7" twist Remington 16" barrel and show flat primers at 2230fps.
This has lead me stray from the tried and true to search for a new high velocity bullet to suit this rifle. I wanted to stay with the 125 to 130gr weight range as anything lighter is way over stabilised at high velocities in the 1-7" twist and accuracy often falls apart on the longer ranges.

First up I tried 130gr Speer TNT HP which always shot well in my old 1-8" Whispers but after trying a few powders and seating depth combos I concluded they were also just mediocre in this Remington.

I have seen a bit of online hype around the 125gr Hornady SST and how the Fiocchi factory ammo loaded with this bullet seemed to be the go to in the USA for a very accurate supersonic load.

While personally Im not a fan of Hornady bullets or bullets with cannelures in general but I thought Id give them a go.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any 125gr SSTs in stock in NZ when I went looking but I did find the 123gr Z-Max 310" 7.62x39 version. Close enough.. I lubed them and pushed them through my .308 cast bullet sizer which was actually easier than I expected it was going to be and loaded them up with my favourite 125gr bullet charge of 19gr of H110.

I loaded 5 to the cannelure groove like Fiocchi do but being a fairly long flat based bullet I could see that I could also pull them out closer to the lands too which has help accuracy in many other bullets Ive tried in this rifle. The closer I can get them to its long throated lands (designed around the longer subsonic bullets) the better I have found.
Here's the 123gr Z-max along side my trusty 125gr Nosler BT and the 240gr SMK both loaded 20 thou off the lands.

As you can see the Z-max seated to the cannelure has a lot of jump.

I only sized 10 bullets to .308 and put two of the cannelure groove seated ones over the chrono to test velocities so there was only 3 of them left to put on paper. I clocked them right on 2200fps which is a tad low for a 123gr in a 16" barrel but the primer was flat so Im picking the 1-7" twist lfts the pressure substantially compared to my older 1-8 twist barrels.

So the 3 remainder short seated bullets were shot out to 100 yard and gave me just over an inch group. Nothing to rave about there.

Back to the bench I shot the last two expecting to ruin the nice group.. pleasantly surprised it was still under a 1/2 MOA

The difference in pressure between the two seating depths was massive though, the flat primers were quite bad on the cannelure seated bullets.
I feel I could lift the powder weight another .5gr in the longer seated ones and maybe grab a bit more velocity.

Because I'm not sure how clear I made it at the start of this thread but Im a total bullet snob.... AND I HATE SST's!!!!
The price you pay for them v/s weight and dimension deviations in a box of this crap is nothing short of dog shit.. and yes I did scratch through the whole box to weigh and measure off bullets to get 10 that were close to the same weight and dimensions...

So next up is a bullet Ive been dying to test... the 125gr Sierra Tipped Match King.
Specifically designed for the BLK round these are supposed to be the ducks nuts and from my observations they are very similar in makeup as the noslers that went so well on game in my previous guns.

Black Hills match make a factory loading with this bullet but I have been unable to find any reviews on it.

.338 between 2580 fps and 2180 fps
.332 @ 2180 fps and below

While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts.

Now the flat base gives me hope that these can be pulled out longer and get close to the lands while still leaving enough in the neck to hold them concentric.
I know many frown upon using such frangible bullets like these TMK's, nosler ballistic tips and V-Max etc on larger game but anyone who has done so will know that the BLK actually benefits from bullets like this.
The Relatively low muzzle velocity of the BLK doesn't grenade these rounds like a .308 win does, they start out much slower and wash of even more speed over 100-200 yards so frangible varmint bullets actually hold together and form a nice mushroom like a heavier hunting bullet does at higher velocities in bigger "powder wasting" cals.

I reckon 300 BLK "has arrived" with a decent range of projectiles and loads specifically tailored to its performance now readily available and cheap - the Fiocchi is $36 for 25 rounds and its high quality ammo with good brass. We can probably put this down to suppressors becoming "possible" and therefore popular in the "land of the free" haha. Its popularity will only grow now I think.

I've tested the Fiocchi 125 SST ammo in two rifles now, it shot groups of about 40mm in my AR, in the Ruger American it shot 19mm groups. Hopefully I'll have a report on its performance on some Reds soon.

This has got me interested. I'm looking for a second rifle to shoot at the range while I wait for mine to cool done.
This seems to tick the boxs. Plus with the fun of reloading.
Couple of questions @Wingman
1. The blackout rifles that are for sale here in the uk are over priced and in the wrong twist rate 1.7 from every thing you and others have said 1.8 is the go. So would you buy a barrel in .300 or .338? Also why.
2. I'm restricted here in the uk to bolt action........feck it can't remember the second question :D must have been a lie:XD:

1-7" is fine but 1-8" is more versatile over a broader range of projectiles.
.338 is a pricey plinker and has no where near the range of projectiles.. its more of a hunter than a range toy.
Build a custom CZ 527 with a 1-8" 17" barrel and you will have a great all round rifle.

Interesting read. I got back today from a hunting trip a mate and I both run 300BLK we got six stags between us I gave him some 194gr Lehigh ME to try for the first time as he’s been using the 208gr A-max for the last 4-5 years in his Rem 700 mostly for head neck shots. It was the first time he’s shot over 180m with his blackout, and I dailed out to 260m on a 26 degree up hill shot in the lungs. We both lined up the stags and fired 2 shots each in 5 seconds after they dropped and slid off the hill the hill erupted in other stags bolting up the hill. The first for the trip we shot two Hummel spikers fighting in the fog at 60m.

Back to reloading I’m running ADI 2205 for everything supers and subs, home made 300BLK brass from LC 223 cut down, sized, trimed to spec then I weight each case into 3 weight groups to get the lowest ES for best long range. My 12” barrel shoots the 194gr ME 9.1gr of ADI2205 @ 1018fps, with the same batch my mates rem 700 16” barrel is doing 1070fps. Going super I’ve only used nosler 125gr BT @ 2005 fps, I do know of a guy down south using hornady 110gr v-max and has shot 100 deer with his AR 300BLK.

So as you see the new 125gr TMK is about the same length as the nosler 125gr BT but the flat base meant more case room and less compressed loads.
I loaded the TMK to a little over half way down the neck which gives me about 30 thou to the lands. While some may think that is quite a big jump, keep in mind this projectile was designed for the .300blk in the AR15 platform. These Sierra bullets apparently cope with big jump just fine. Either way I loaded them toward the long side as I have a non restricting AI mag so just set them up the same as my 240gr Subsonic base to ogive measurement.

Next I loaded up some test loads with H110 in 0.5gr increments from 18.5gr to 20.5gr.
Yes I know that's a big increment but I know this cal well and knew what I was looking for.

Out of interest I looked up Sierras load data for this 125gr TMK and they state a max charge of 18.7gr of H110 in a 16" 1-8" twist with an COAL of 2.260 giving somewhere in the 2200fps range.
However I have mine loaded at 2.322" which will drop the pressure and velocity compared to their loads and considering my nosler 125gr load is running 20.5gr of H110 I knew I wasnt pushing any new limits with my loads. The pic below is a case from each of the loads showing pressure clearly increasing from left to right. Even the load of 20.5gr wasnt showing any high pressure signs other than a slight primer crater typical of the Rem 700s but the group and velocity spread was the tightest at 19.5gr giving me an average speed of 2390fps.

Out to 100 yards I put them on paper along side my Nosler 125gr ballistic tip loads. The Noslers have always been my best shooters in all my .300 Whisper/BLK rifles but they have never done better than a inch in this one. Today was no different.. they shoot at 2420fps in the 1-9" 16" barrel but the same load used to give me 2500fps in the 1-8" 17 inch whisper barrels with tiny ragged holes at 100 yards.

I was very happy to see the new TMK halved that inch group on a very moderate load. I may still push it a bit faster and try some ADI 2205 behind them as one of my BLK AR15's seemed to favour that powder over the H110 with the 125gr loads.

Hi Wingman have you tried lil'gun in your supersonic loads, I've had good results with both 110gn vmaxs and nosler 125gn
Thinking of trying the 135gn fmx heard they work well

If you are after a cheap projectile for general range work try the CMJ Frontier 155g .308 Projectile.
At $184 per 1000 they are hard to go past.
Its all I shoot through by 300 blackout.

Nah Ive never tried the Lil Gun, Ive always had great results with H110 for both subs and supers so never really strayed from it. I used 2205 on one of my AR15 BLKs bit that was more of a gas flow issue I was chasing.

Interestingly Sierra doesnt have data for LilGun with their 125gr TMK but do have it for the 110gr and 168gr.

What is its case fill like behind a 125gr and what is the approximate velocity with a max load in a 16" tube?

I see hodgdon have it on their load data website, I did my development back in 2012.

Lilgun for me was better than H110 - 110gn vmaxs at 2500fpc max and 125gn 2450fps max I settled just below these maxs in a 16" barrel AR. Case life seemed ok being AR lost quite a few

Looking at ordering some 135gn FTX and ADI 300brass for a bit more development

I've shot a couple of deer with the 125's now out of my 12.5 ar. Both double lunged, pass throughs and clean if not spectacular kills. The first one got a second between the ears to hurry it along but it had only run 20m and lay down anyway, so would have expired.

I'm contemplating moving to somthing slight softer but will shoot a couple more before i make my mind up.

They shoot moa over little gun for me. Haven't chronied as Its a bush gun with red dot
