Is anyone having or had any trouble with misfires with a Tikka and CCI Large Mag primers? A mate has had this happen a couple of times now in the field with his 270Win. The primers are NOT getting seated to deep.
I'm using a Rem700 in 270WSM and am using the same primers(from the same batch/box) and haven't had any issues.
Has your mate cleaned and lubed the firing pin in his Tikka lately ?
Some of them can rust quite badly and if bad enough there is potential it could contribute to a light firing pin strike.
+1 on that. I had mine wet a couple of times and took a while to clean it. Rust was forming just forward of the spring where it seats against the bolt casing. Would be first thing to check.Quote:

Have you tried finding Large Rifle primers lately? Also, he's shooting 1/3 MOA with this load combination from a unmodified $1000 rifle, so not keen on changing thing at the moment.Quote:

CCI ammo /primers etc always where cheap & we get what we pay for .
I'd start with some better quality primers before you blame the rifle.
This is what I was thinking too. I recently spend a week around Dusky Sound hunting and fishing. Most of the guys in the group had Sako's and most had never had the bolt in bits to clean. They very surprised at the rust forming on the pin around the area Gibo mentions.Quote:

Had a couple of "hang fires" with cci large rifle magnum primers in a 7mm rem mag. Put it down to possible mix up with my large rifle ones???
I've never had any issues with CCI primers, over 3 or 4 different cartridges. Only had misfires with WLR's.
Always have used CCI primers never had any problems either. Both in 6.5x55 and 223
Yeah I use CCI450 and have no problems
Have no problems with CCI .22lr ammo either
CCI 250s are "harder" in the cup making it more difficult for a weak firing pin to ignite them compared to Fed 215s.
Also they are "weaker" in the spark than Fed 215s so won't ignite slow powders in cold conditions reliably esp in the bigger magnum cases.
Thanks guys, this is what we were thinking. Harder cup and most likely a dirty bolt/pin.
This has only happened twice, but don't want it to happen at the wrong time. Again, my Rem700 has never, ever had an issue :)
Over sizing cases another possible contributing factor???
I use CCI primers in my pistols and my 6.5x68 and have never had a shot not work on first strike
tikkas have a very light firing pin spring, so they do tend to have more misfire problems than some other actions. I had problem with blow primers on by T3 6br until I put a packer in the spring to give it a pit more pressure on the firing pin and have not had a single blown primer since
