Hi Guys
Just looking for a little advice on this one. I haven't loaded brand new brass before - have always bought loaded ammo then reloaded. But I have a plastic bag of 100 brand new Norma 6.5 x 55 brass and I'm wondering if it's a good idea to full length resize it to iron out any lumps and bumps it might have got along the way,*or if it's good to just load it up and go.

I only full length size new brass if the case mouth has obvious dents. Most Norma stuff I've had hasn't needed sizing.
Hey Will, id full length and trim it mate. Then you know they are all uniform n dimension to start with

Start everything as uniform as possible
I don't. Just check headspace and trim length then load it.
Load it, use it, reload it.
Done it that way for damn near 30yrs, never had a problem.

My Rookie thoughts after asking similar question a while back would be to just check length and batch together any that have slight variance. Load and fire to form to chamber then trim/neck size next reload.

Well .223 brass adi and lapua, the headspace and trim lengths are pretty much bang on for book spec and my chamber. I just check to know the brass will chamber and trim length check for safety. So far it's always good. I just load it. Never had to trim new brass.
I'm not sure how much it grows, no more than normal.
I trim every load anyway to have the cases all a constant length, not trimming to book spec though.
I don't know if this is right or wrong. But I don't see the point in sizing it if there already the size I want. They shoot as good as any other load.
have never bothered with sizing new brass, but had one batch of Norma brass for my 7mmRM where primer pockets were tight as the nuns you know what. Had to spend a bit of time uniform pockets to get primers seated correctly.

I inspect and weigh my new brass looking for odd balls, throw them out. Then I neck size and put the case through my Lee Ezi-trim to make sure the brass is reasonably consistent then fire form it. I neck size from then on and use a Wilsons chamber gauge as a post reload check, final weigh to make sure I have not made a squib and box it ready to go. This would be the basic stuff covered.
Do you debur the flash hole before weigh sorting?

They are pics from the internet, hand primer tool jammed and set off a primer, the proximity detonation of all the other primers in the tool opens up the flesh, not good.Quote:

I have yet to see the need as they all look OK but I do buy good quality brass such as lapua competition. What I am looking for initially is an obviously bad case made during production so all I am looking to end up with initially is 'safe' and consistent brass to fire form. eg from the last 400 lapua 308w cases I found one that was stuffed all the rest were fine and weighed within a few points of a grain. I have had half grain burrs out of Lapua brass. That's why I asked. I was surprised to say the least.
I agree, everything else aside consistent neck tension will turn an accurate load into scary accurate.
I anneal every firing and have improved the results I get on paper and with my chrony to a point where I know if I do my bit I find shooting to 600 child's play on steel etc.

Anyways my 100 new Norma 6.5 x 55 cases are mainly between 2.158 and 2.161 with a fair few outliers as low as 2.156 and as high as 2.163. Trim-to in the manual is 2.155 although my Lee trimmer on an electric drill takes it down to 2.151. So... do you think with that much variation it's worth trimming them? I'm kind of thinking might as well do it.
Sorry guys - late to the party, but had to waste good range time on Sunday because I had to spend Saturday resizing new R-P 7mm Rem Mag brass. Bought it brand new a few weeks ago - didn't check it until I sat down on Saturday arvo to prime and powder drop my 50 new brass - only to find that at least a third had misshapen necks - not sure whether they were dented from prior handling or what, but wasn't too happy.
Moral of the story - should have checked it immediately I bought it!!
I'm a minimalist regarding working my brass.
I load for 223 using Norma cases and 308 with Lapua Palma cases.
The Norma brass has never been trimmed or full length sized and some of them have been loaded 7 times.
The Lapua brass has been used without trimming or full length sizing.
Each to his own, I prefer the minimal approach.
