How short would you have to cut a .22lr barrel to get supersonic ammo below the speed of sound? Is it possible/practical?
I know this would vary depending on the ammo used but has anyone tried it or know anything about it?

@gundoc ???? - Also at what distance you looking to shoot - big diff between 25 and 100 in 22lr land.
Also is it a special type of 22lr supersonic projectile you want to use otherwise - why not use a good subsonic brand and work from there???
Sounds like the sort of thing @mudgripz would have tried. The nzrimfire page doesn't get used much, but is still there. Lots of good info. Also try rimfirecentral
Hey not many people realise but 22 Le gets faster as you shorten the barrel. Use subs
The problem as I see it with this idea & the ported/suppressed barrels that make supers subs is there is no going back.
If you ever want to shoot supers you can't.
I believe subsonic ammo has softer lead & bigger cavities to allow it to work efficiently subsonic, super sonic ammo is a different story.
Not sure it would be feasable or legal. Firing hv from a pistol doesn't make it subsonic. in fact, i'm guessing you would have to have an impracticably long barrel to actually slow the projectile sufficiently, because it's about speed. Just use a 16 inch shorty with subs.
Depends what round you want to shoot but could be as short as 3-4"

Not really practical for a rifle.
The longer the barrel the quieter it will be with a suppressor
I was just thinking that. If you have ever fired a .22 pistol they are definitely louder than a rifle. My 10/22 with a 16" barrel and MAE suppressor is plenty quiet.
Excellent. I don't particularly want a very short barrel but am cutting the "big fat bit" off the end of a Toz to put a suppressor on. Looks like the plain old sub will do the trick.
the winchester power point subsonic 42grn are in a class of thier own ....by far my favourite round for small game at the under 100yard range.
just buy a box of cci subs !
I shoot a 6" barrelled pistol CCI standard still does 975fps, in my 20" rifle it does 1050-1075fps so going short doesn't slow down much supersonic loads would not
slow down to sub velocity in a 6" barrel and you would have an illegal file arm most likely
I shoot std CCI in a 4" barrel pistol. 975,906.926.949,948. fps
.22 supersonic reaches full velocity in about 16" of barrel, and becomes measurably slower after about 24". I would think 9-10" would give subsonic velocity with hi-speed ammo. At that length you would be in possession of a pistol (ie; less than 762mm overall length). Stick with 16" and use subsonic! If you wish to shoot bigger bodied animals like hares, etc, then you will get much better penetration with target ammo with the RN lead solid. The Winchester subsonic HP bullet expands very quickly and will create nasty wounds on hares but not give clean kills due to insufficient penetration.
Thanks for that @gundoc (and all others). .22 will be for close range rabbits etc. I have a 17HMR (or .223 rem) if anything bigger or father away needs dealing to. Sounds like 16", subsonic and a big fat suppressor is the way to go.
Keep an eye out for Aquila SSS sub sonic. Rather than drop to loading they upped the size of the projectile to 60gr. Especially if you want to carry a bit more energy into your target. can be hard to get though...
Funny looking things, sort of a 22 short case with a huge long bullet. None of my 22s would stableise them, shot side on holes all over the target at 10 metres. But they were super quiet without a silencer sort of a pop. I guess a fast twist is needed to have them work.
Pretty dam short i shot my mates pistol which had the shortest barrel legal for a b cat apparently and that was still supersonic
I have herd reports of ported fully suppressed barrels like the savage shorty shooting supersonic at subsonic speeds
had a ported barrel Remington a few years ago what a piece of shit that was different story once I put a normal barrel back on it
To those who replied to this thread.
I should have been clearer n my OP.
I am not trying to get hi velocity .22 to go subsonic. I was more interested to see if standard velocity (which is generally rated only just over sos) would go sub in a slightly shorter than average barrel. When I get the rifle sorted I will chronograph some and report back.
I thought you meant supersonic ammo like winchester power point cci mini mags etc
If you're talking standard vol like cci standard or other target ammo
Then you're talking very little speed drop a slightly shorter than average barrel should get it consistently below sos i say consistently as the speed is so close to sos anyway that from my experience only a few per packet make the big crack my 16 inch kidd was putting ccis right on the edge of sos with slight very in speed between rounds was enough where one would break sos and the next wouldn't
I only used cci as practice ammo and lapua which is far more consistent than cci was my competition ammo the lapua was consistently under sos as its slightly slower than cci to start off with
