REM700 bolt problems

Got a 280ai that’s been in the gun safe for a few months cos I’ve been playing round with other projects. Got it out to run some loads. Bolt very hard to close - hand loads & factory 280. Not all rounds but most. Never was like this in past. Checked brass - col is fine, tried shoulder bumping a couple of fired rounds, made no difference. On close inspection of case rim (head) I noticed a small mark. Up close you can see small chunks of brass has been shaved off. See photo.
Then looking at bolt face I see small brass shavings. Me thinks this is an extractor issue ?
Any ideas how to fix ?Attachment 83304

Check the chamber and bolt locking area of the action is clean....could be shit not letting the extractor open enough to hop over the case end.
Or it could just be a Lemington.

torn/buckled/damaged extractor clip in end of bolt?

Extractor clip looks intact and can’t see any shite in the chamber although it’s hard to see into the inner most edges. Might try another more aggressive clean of chamber with large nylon brush. If not fixed after that then the “Lemmington” will be off to a smith.

Out of interest, who chambered it for you? Im thinking potential cause of the sticky cases, a mate had a kinda similar experience with his, turns out the reamer that was used must have been worn out. The problem only arose after 2-3 firings on the brass.

Truflite bbl & chamber & Gunworks for bolt fluting. Breaking barrel in and initial load dev (maybe 60 -70 rounds) showed no such issues at all. Only encountered this issue very recently (~18 mo down the track).
Googling "Rem700 bolt hard to close" shows some common issues with the extractor mechanism. Cure seems to be replace the extractor, but I aint no gunsmith.

You can get sh+t lodged in the extrator groove in the bolt face that stops the claw from clipping over the case rim. Give it a good clean with a tooth brush and solvent.

Blast some CRC Brakleen into all the nooks and crannies with the tooth brush routine and remember to let it evaporate and re-oil.

When you resized the cases did you lube the inside of the case neck did you find more than usual resistance on the upstroke I had this when I got lazy the shell holder actually deformed and ripped part of the rim off then out came the DIY case extractor :pissed off:

Your photo looks as you stated the ejector as the brass appears to be pushed forward in your photo.

One of my first steps was to blast the bolt face with brake cleaner and used a nylon brush to clean out and brass chards.
No issues with neck sizing, always use a smear of lube inside necks.
I think I solved it since - got a AR10 nylon chamber brush and used it to give chamber a solid clean out. This removed some junk that must been jammed in the inside edge of chamber

Result :thumbsup:

It's worth spending $25 and replacing the extractor on a Rem700 every now and again too.
