    Sharps 500gr bullets

Hi all, did my normal on lathe bullet mould making bit for a 500gr single bullet mould in ali and had a try out to see what I have got. Dropped out of the mould nicely and weight was 488grs, so not to bad, will see how they shoot with 65grs 2f in my Sharps but will be wearing my shoulder pad for sure.

They look very similar to the lee 500 but with better lube grooves so should go well. Given the rifles weight, recoil should be "mild".

Is there any particular grade or series of ali used for bullet moulds? Just wondering as I have a bit of free machining ali that I could probably make something out of, but the free machining ali usually has a bit of lead and other metals alloyed with it to make it turn nicely and I wonder if that could cause issues.

Bugged if I know, I`v got a lump of ali 8' wide x .650" thick and all my moulds come form that, I`v no idea what type of ali it is so you should be ok, just smoke the mould before casting . My bullets came out .459"/ 62" dia so sized to .459" after applying lube and then loaded up some more with 37grs of 3031, should give me around 1,3200 mv in my 27" barrel. The heaver bullets are said to be good at longer ranges so will try them at 100m and 200m, that's if they shoot ok in my 1-20" twist barrel, the test is coming up.

!!,I just knew it, now I will have to explain what's the ring on the nose!!!. A bloody glitch in my nose cutter, it picked up a lump of ali and that's the result but may be ok as a bigger memplate , aww, hole , good for hunting? , may be the new bullet shape of the century at the deer cemetery .

Pervert !, now I`ll have to hide them away form all the girl shooter at the range, specially with my pink bullet lube, would think I`m a dirty old man. "Look at that mans bullets, don`t they look sexy"

OK, Update on the 488gr cast bullets, tried some with 3031, 35.5gr and 40gr, at 100m not good , five shots and no holes in the target. All were going over the top and when I did get some on they were all over the place, so no target. Next batch was loaded with 65gr 2f Swiss and shot at 50m , a lot better, could see where they where going and liked the black powder better. Looks like I`ll be trying the black at 100m to see if I can get a group of some sort, and the barrel is getting a good polish.

Yea, you could be right, but I like one powder for all my rifle reloading and 3031 is good in 308,3030 and the Sharps , have tried A D I 2208 not to bad in the Sharps with medium loads . The main thing here is that it is a home made barrel and this is as good as it will get, maybe, every time I shoot it I`m polishing the barrel so it may improve over time. Good things take time, so more bullet casting, reloading, and range shooting and when my winter hunt comes around Ill be able to shoot the balls off a possy at 100m.

Hi 40mm, if you look back up the thread you will see 4 45-70 loaded cases, it`s a 1874 Sharps falling block, great fun.

Great! a shooting adventure after my own heart.

Is that how you are doing the test shooting, off the sticks like that, or off the bench?

What alloy are you using for your bullets?

How much are you compressing the black powder?

Are you using a card under the bullet?

Are you wiping the bore between shots when you shot those targets, or fired them in a row?

I would try a different softer lube for blackpowder, shoot a test with just straight Chefade see if that changes things.

One could try removing the ring on the nose for five rounds and see if that makes any difference.
