Small primer and large primer in sand rifle

Curious on this. I know that 6.5 creed comes with small primer brass and large primer brass. Can both types be fired in the same rifle? Or is it a case of picking one from the start?

If so what is the difference on the rifle? Bolt/firing pin?

    Thanks team

Both can be used in the same calibre rifle no difference to the firing pin being a centre fire.

Difference claimed are that SR cases last longer in the pocket area.

There is some debate that LR offer better ignition particularly of slower powders in colder conditions.

As @spada said - same rifle. With a 6.5 Creedmoor being a centrefire means that the firing pin hits the primer in the center so both large and small primers work in the same rifle.

I use large primers on Hornady brass and they are working just fine. Not expensive either. But my understanding is that the small primer brass is stronger because there is a smaller hole in the back of the brass so it will likely give a longer life (more reloads) if properly looked after.

I have been looking at better quality brass, but finding other than Hornady in Large Primer is not easy. Starline is potentially another option, but I did not see availability and pricing on it yet. Might be that it is available elsewhere in the world but not so much here.

    @janleroux - here you go:

So far I've only used Lapua small primer cases - they're spendy but last so well that they are superb value for money! Quality out of the box is very high, worth buying for sure.

    Thanks a mil @Steelisreal.
They are actually less expensive than Hornady cases. I think I paid $85 or something for 50 pieces.

I use Lapua and Peterson SRP brass in the 6.5 CM. Both are worth the money IMHO over Hornady. I'll give the nod to Peterson being the better of the two. Absolutely superb and you get a very nice plastic storage box included.

Edit: I have 35 once fired Hornady 6.5 CM brass. I have annealed the cases in an AMP annealer which gives perfect annealing and also polished the brass and cleaned the primer pockets. $40 delivered.

2nd vote for the Peterson in the 6.5 in both Small primer and large primer versions. Supposedly the smaller primer is better in that it allows you to go a bit more hotter in your loads before signs. Capacity is fine but they do have thicker walls than the lapua versions. Starline also do a good sp version of the brass that is getting great reviews out there in the 6.5 forums.

Yup thanks @Mauser308 for raising that - I am absolutely not recommending using mixed brass SP&LP with same loads and expecting same results, so accordingly the use of mixed brass needs to be managed appropriately if you have both.

Thanks mate for pointing that out - people may have fallen into that wee tiger trap.... I was trying to highlight the differences between the two, in terms of pressure signs being present relative to both primer sizes. But I totally see how that could potentially lead people off in the wrong direction in a mixed brass usage situation..

I used the SRP lapua brass when I had a CM. It did many reloads. When i changed to a Target rifle .308, as I had a surplus of SRP's I have opted to go down the "palma" brass route. I will be interested to see how many reloads they go.
I also run LRP's but with a different load for the 300 yd stuff.
I get the same POI from the 300 yd loads ( large primer cases, lighter load. Compared to the small rifle primer 3000fps stuff at the 500 yd mark )
That wasnt intentional but a usefull outcome.
