Thread: What causes this ?

Not sure if this is "light strikes" or something else.

Every now and then I am getting a dent in the primer, but no kaboom. Basically just a click when I pull the trigger. Happens randomly, maybe once every 20-30 cases.

Rifle is a Savage 16 with Accutrigger. Trigger is set to lightest pull.

Case shoulder measurement compared to fireformed is 0.002 thou less.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Sell the Savage

Have you reamed the primer pockets at all?
consistent primer seating depth?
Hard primer weak strike?

No on reaming primer pocket. I do clean up any crimp with a chamfer tool.

Using Fiochi primers, same as in my 308 target rifle, no probs there.

Nice 'n clean bolt, firing pin ?

Dud primers? do they go bang if you try again? Firing pin protrusion measurement?

Its happened to me once in about 3-400 rounds , cci lr primer

I had a few misfires with the fiochi primers and also slow ignitions....

About half of them go bang on the second attempt

Will strip the bolt and have a good look inside and at the firing pin

VC, how would primer pocket reaming affect this ? Too loose ?

Too deep.

Sounds like light strikes/weak firing pin/crap in the bolt, firing pin area.

I haven't used those primers but CCIs can do it, their cups are pretty tough compared to Fed.

I have seen the same problem with fiochi primers being the issue.

"Using Fiochi primers" I think a few at PRC have commented that Barnard actions dont seem to like these. Matt and Grace at least.

Some club ammo was loaded with them and a whole heap of them wouldn't go off through my target rifle, changed to my reloads with CCI BR-2's and she was sweet.

If you have a softer primer like federal try them and see how you go. I found Fiocchi primers to be on the hard side and with a combination of light spring and hard primer I could see this possibly being a problem.

Had good success with Fiocchi primers so far and found them to give consistent velocity. Just as accurate in my deer rifle as Federal 210M. Always have reamed the primer pockets though even on Lapua brass.

I would suspect rust on the firing pin spring or shaft.

bad batch of primers or old primers, primers too deep, light strikes, hard primers or ive even had it happen because of a dirty bolt which was so blocked it was making light strikes !!!! those are the main reasons I can thing of
