Thread: Why is N130 with 150gn shunned by the 308 16" barrel crowd?

Why is N130 with 150gn shunned by the 308 16" barrel crowd?

Looked hard through the comments on forums and quite a lot of people ignore this powder with 308 and 150gn projectiles. I checked GRT first and it burns 100% clean, fills the load to 92%. Has slightly less recoil than N140 and less pressure. Hits 2500fts at 52,000psi. Way under 62,000psi max pressure.

    Thoughts?

I do have Varget but the burned % looks too high (84% only)
AND (prob should have lead with this), the free VV app contains 5 different loads with 150grain projectiles.

I'm trying to tune my new T3x bush hunter 2 to hit very specific points with a red dot and magnifier. Total weight of optics is lighter than anything around (590grams).

I used chairgun Elite app to figure out that a 16m zero (top of actual dot) would also hit perfectly at 300m. It's the only app to have that holosun reticle.

50m is like 50mm higher than the 200 mark (the gut line). Then 100 -250m is as you see above for 200m. Looks easy to me

It's a bit of a myth that faster powders always give better results in short barrels, it's the powders burn characteristics that determine what you'll get . . . GRT reporting 100% burnt doesn't mean all that much. I'm getting a bit over 2700 from 17" with LVR but pressure is right up there and this is a worked up load, there isn't any load data I can find.

It's more expensive and harder to obtain here. It's good powder but realistically BM2 will do the same for half the cost.

I am not sure where you hunt and how far you have to shoot, but what would happen if you were zeroing at say 150/170 and using the bottom of the circle for your longer shots?

That is it in a nut shell. Hodgdon or ADI pistol data for the .308 in a 15 inch barrel shows 2,500 fps is possible with a whole bunch of powders. I also would not get too hung up on what some App tells you as it is what happens in the real world when you pull the trigger that counts.

The powder went extremely well. Very happy with it (38.85gns) yielded 2515(cold clean barrel)-2565fts with virgin Lapua. I'll definitely use the rest of the bottle of N130. Low to medium recoil.

Had mixed results at 200m. The big fat dot is actually 6cm at that range. I knew that in advance and opted for big black diamond shaped targets. Got an absolute scorching 3shot group that was 20mm c/c. But the next was 3" and left. Noticed it taxes the eyes a fair bit.

I've chucked my unkillable Nikko on it for a test out to 300m but I'll just zero at 100 and dial if I need to.
But that dot did send the rounds up 170mm
Where is was expecting them to land. The idea was to use the deer's gut line from 100-250. Seemed like a good idea but wind would have made this setup hard at 300m

I think the ring edge is like 500m so I turned it off for the test

Same here. I have 2208 in the cupboard, works ok, so why buy a more expensive powder. I found 150gn and heavier is fine with 2208 in the 16.5" 308, but with the lighter projectiles (125gn Pro-Hunter) a faster powder loses less velocity in the short barrel, have switched to 2219 with good results. But didn't make much difference with 150gn so stick with 2208. I would try BM2 or 8208 with the lighter projectile if I had it, but I don't...
