17HMR 20 gn Hornady XTP projectiles on bigger small game

    Hi folks,

I have been using the 17gn V-max projectiles and these are pretty good. I have however been noticing they are lacking a bit on bigger possums and feral cats. Or shooting running hares from the south end going north the penetration seems to be not enough. There are some big ones around as well. I am talking body shots too. Just wondering if people have tried the 20gn XTP rounds and if you think these might be a better all round option. I am still shooting rabbits as well but really need them to perform on bigger small predators. I vaguely recall using these years ago and finding they didn't open up very well. Thoughts and particularly personal experience appreciated. How have you found they group compared to the 17gn V-max?

    Thanks

Tried the 20gn in my cz455, didn't group well enough to use at the ranges I wanted so just learnt to wait for the right shot.... (tricky when in a rush and they are running for the end of the spotlight range or fenceline)

The projectile has the energy to deal to critters much bigger than hares and possums but only with patience and shot placement

I use the Hornady 17 gr a lot . 150 to 300 a night or so.. They are accurate. Mostly the pests just role over but if not, no worries, a second bullet anchors them. RIP

Thanks folks. Might stick with the 17gn V max then but have a wee play with the 20gn and see if it will shoot in my rifle.

I only use the 20 gn ammo. I find them very accurate and reliable through my Ruger American. Havent had any trouble on possums or hares. Hares have been a good 4-5kg.
