Off topic, but that kid is impressive. Doing it all in a little boat by himself and without any of the macho bullshit. Haven't come across his videos before. I thought he was going to be some tree hugger at the start of the video, got that wrong!

Haven't heard anyone else speak like him this century though

I couldn't care less if that was it. But turns out they can affect the outcome, and that is an issue. First the cats then the deer, next the pigs before you know it you can't shoot anything and the rest is history

there is a chapter in one of my hunting books by kingsley field......think RUMPY has it at moment???
on shooting DOGS on station close to taupo
eye opening to say the least....
there is a simple way to tell if a cat is feral or not...if its dead and its feline..its feral
more than 1km away from house its not being a domestic cat..therefore its fair game....
I would rather have a no 22lr/airgun rule installed to take care of wounding..shotgun or centrefire is much better ideal.

Brings back memories of staying on the Rangatira Lands and Survey block when I was a kid. Rangatira was part way to Acacia Bay so not far from Taupo.
Farm manager had been have trouble with sheep worrying and one night he eventually was able to shoot 2 dogs. Only one had a collar and that traced the owner to a minister in Taupo. Apparently he went ballistic....

Was that before or after he got the bill for the sheep ?

If you have ever seen first hand the damage dogs do to sheep you can understand why farmers get so upset about it

@mickyduck I can understand people being iffy about air rifles.
They need accurate placement and the fpe over distance is something you have to be incredibly aware of. Not all airguns are suitable, I'd maybe say put a limit on what fpe an air rifle must have to enter. So make it any air rifle has to be run over a chrono and the pellet being used on day presented so down range fpe can be calculated. Anything that doesn't hold energy out to a certain distance is not accepted. (prior to comp start) 22lr I don't see your point. I'd hate to see how many more possums, cats, rabbits, hares, etc would be in country if people weren't shooting with them 22lr because it may wound them.
A shot gun fired at too long a distance may end up with a spread pattern that has only a couple of shot hitting and in non vital areas. What's the differnce between that and a 22lr or air rifle pellet being off?
I'd also point out that the dumping of unwanted kittens/cats and the animal lovers feeding wild cats (yep them grannies with cans of tuna count)
though well meaning have been a big part of helping get the feral cat population established and in some cases ( I met a woman about 40 odd years ago who was feeding wild cats from her place 30 approx I counted over a dozen plates of food set out)
are among type of ppl crying foul over this competition. Is this why it's an issue for cats to be wounded (non intentionally) but other spieces don't get afforded the same outrage about the chance of being wounded in culling process.
To me it beggers belief that they even got taken seriously.
Personally I salute them all with my middle finger.

They are another spieces totally over looked by many. Seen reports of wasps keeping tui off the honey dew of certain trees, depriving them of essential food when other sources are scarce.
Bit to expensive to knock em off one by one with air rifle but would be fun.
Unloaded a side by side into a wild bee swarm that had settled on a tree, and were all surrounding the Queen in massive ball on a farm block. Didn't stick around to see immediate results. But weren't there next day.

We get big ones appearing inside when the place warms up.
(I suspect from the firewood that I bring inside, possibly hibernating?)

A zap from BrakeClean spray turns them into curled up dead wasp.

years ago in kingcountry...30kms from nearest shops we had feral cat problem, the .12ga USED to live in corner of kitchen with rounds on bench...our cat would have scrap with feral on lawn,I would jump up grab shottie and fix the issue of whos place it was..jumped up one night to shoot offender and it stood there,so called it and it too came and rubbed around my legs, beautiful HUGE black tom with long straight glossy fur... we kept him for 2 days till Mum could go into Taumarunui to the pet shop....the ysaid to her go and buy some tins of pet food in case he is here for a while...Mum was back 20 minutes later with pet food and he had already headed out door to a new home.
that one really sticks in my mind as we lived so far away from anyone else, nearest neighbour was 5kms in either direction and cat wasnt thiers.

my point is that a centrefire hit on a cat is far more likely to be quickly leathal if poorly placed than same hit with rimfire.... yip you 100% correct about shotgun and out of range.....but in range its vastly superior to a rimfire...
at end of day animals MUST be dispatched quickly..on that we can all agree
