Obviously not talking about the ones that live in the city but the ones that live around farmlands.
Does anyone hunt Pigeons or doves?
Iv read they are "open season" all year round.

Hardly see any sky rats on the farmland but Kereru are a common sight and they are protected.
The only pigeons out this way are native wood pigeons but I do see quite a few ring neck doves down on the road.
the grey/blue ones in farmers paddocks/under bridges/in barns are fair game..the big fat greeny/blue and white ones in trees are NOT....
I do know the difference between sky rats and the native pigeon.
if Im carrying a shotgun and one comes within range,it goes in the game bag... last one was opening weekend of duckshooting...about 50 yards up and load of steel #3s dropped it cleanly...it wont be shitting in the maimai anymore.
There's a flock under almost every rural bridge in Taranaki. It would be very easy to bag a few. Unsure how palatable they are though?
Delectable

I've got a mate who shoots close to 4000 pigeons a year. They thrive on maize paddocks. very easy to decoy if you can setup near their flight line.
Doves however are a no no, not sure why.
Yea we shoot a lot of them, a lot of the time the ones from town are half the ones you see on farms. It is open season on them and most farmers are keen for you to get rid of them. they decoy very well especially with wing spinners and can be amazing shotgunning practice.

Reminds me of the time that my dad and I had our best day pigeon shooting ever. Only later did it transpire that there was a pigeon racing meet on the other side of the valley.
we shoot them all the time - they do serious damage to crops, so the farmers are really keen for us to get stuck in during planting and harvest.
Locally (Canterbury) there is a special F&G season for ducks in Feb for the same reason!
