    Question Wallaby hunting

Looking at bowling over some Wallabies in the South Island sometime next month and have a couple of questions. I'll be on DOC land (unless someone invites me out ) so would I be obtaining a small game permit for the area, or a regular game permit? Are there caliber restrictions in place? If I need a small game permit, doesn't that mean I can't use my 7.62x39 rifle?

Regular permit. Minimum cal is .222, so your 7.62x39 is fine.

Be ready for daytime long shooting and night shorting at short range

I’m up there next week (sorry private block and fully subscribed) but some polite door knocking (NOT dressed like Rambo) May well produce some outcomes.

Note the weather conditions. Be prepared for alpine type weather!

the hornady 50 pack ssts work VERY well on them in the x39mm...if close to time you have had no joy deciding where to go flick me a P.M. and I can POINT you in right direction for public land ...if you prepared to walk a couple of hours and listen to where they will be you should see at least half a dozen...maybe 20-40.

7.62x39 is fine. rimfires are discouraged but any centerfire over 22hornet is fine. 204 ruger is debatable

.223 and .22-250 could well have been created with these wee hoppers in mind.....they just "work". the 7.62x39mm works very well too,you hit them and they stay hit. saw dramatic results under a spotlight with the hornady 50 pack sst loads.....
