why is .22LR ammo so expensive now?

The old Australian made winchester power point was great stuff. The new US made stuff is pretty damn expensive and some question the quality $17 for 50 rounds.
It used to only cost $5-6 a box for a long time.
Now it costs more than a box of 12 gauge trap ammo!
I was even able to buy 100 rounds of CCI mini mag last year for the same price.
Seems it's not available anywhere in the country at the moment.
My friend used to joke if anyone of us missed a possum and took more than one shot before killing it.
He joked how it cost 30 cents to kill that possum at 3 shots, now more like a dollar!
Still cheaper than my 12 gauge though, thankfully I don't miss much, I nailed one at 50 metres last week without resting my rifle on anything and just a 4x40 scope.

I've still got multiple brands of .22 ammo (bagged) for $5 for 50 rounds. Pick up only, in West Auckland. PM me.

why does a dog lick its "doggy bits"?????????

    because it can

same reason we pay so much for stuff..because we will
retailer can keep upping prices and we keep paying asked price or go without, supply and demand....
we are bent over with pants around ankles and retailers know it and can happily tell us to "squeal like a piggy" knowing there is nothing we can do about it if we want the stuff they selling

It is market forces that determine prices.

We are a small country with (relatively) few shooters.

On a world scale NZs orders for complete rounds, components, powder are relatively small and won't command great prices.

Freight makes a significant impact of prices.

It is harsh to blame importers or resellers. They have to make a living too.
    I don't think they're ripping us off.

I've always tried to purchase in bulk to be able to ask for a discount, but I don't begrudge others making a living.

    The last time I bought 22LR ammunition I bought 5,000 rounds - a carton of 10 bricks.
That was before any shortage and I'm glad I did.

I can confirm the outrageous pricing, I was in gun city the other day and paid $20.99 for a box of 50 Winchester hollow points. Like others were saying, it's a lot more tempting to use the shotgun instead, especially since its pushing out 10x more lead.

Would seem from what I'm reading on the kiwi air gunners site at the moment that pcp is producing more accuracy and good fpe at distance 60+ meters than 22lr. These are target shooters (as well as hunters) who have really nice target quality 22lr for small bore shooting.
Perhaps the answer is to go pcp. Much cheaper on ammo, lot more set up costs.

It the same all over the world now, price hiking for everything, except housing. I am still in here in Beijing China but will soon go back, the price here is equal to Auckland except vegetables. Pig ribs frozen= $18/ kilo, lamb from $15 to $18, eggs so called free range, $5.00 for $12. But remember, even in the heart of China, Beijinger do `t have your wage. Most family here in my place, there monthly income after heave taxes is about 3k, those ccp are excluded.

With the broken global supply chain, wars and tensions between east and west, doing business cross oceans is not that easy as before. But in NZ, the main reason are the raise of minimum wage, and zeroed the OCR in one MOA group at danger close range, and these two things were done right at pandemic hit in. So, if you gents look back all the media coverage from 2020-earlier 2023, and compare all the measures whatever is...for the safe of xxx, or for the future development, and you may find some similarity between China govt and NZ, as well those pressures put on farmers, NZ govt started one year earlier, and China just begin. But comes to ammo, there is a solution, and it `s depends on who will run next govt of NZ for next 6 years.
