    17 Centrefires for Wallabies/Goats

    More wallabies . . . .

Sitting here thinking about "projects" and was wondering if anybody has shot (more than just the odd one) wallabies and or goats with a 17 CF (17/221, 17 Hornet etc) and if so is there a projectile that will give reliable performance on these smaller but still pretty tough sorts of animals??

    Cheers

been out spotlighting with mate whos son was using 17rimfire....it dropped wallabies reasonably well....But not as well as the 223 or 7.62x39mm VERY loud was my impression, just plain naaasty without suppressor.

I've been using a 17 HMR on rabbits (and a cobber uses it heaps on them) but I'm not sure its got enough "snot" really and the projectile performance of 17 HMR ammo on rabbits is really variable.

yeah its one of those "why would you?'' type situations..... they tell me they awesome on hares, but personally cant see what it can do that .223 cant do better for about same price of ammunition.

Tried the 17 Remington on goats many moons ago, not again, any descent wind and the one next door got shot.

Have used a 17 Rem and a 17 Ackley on 100's of roos. Need to use the Rem or hornady 25gn hollow point to get consistent penetration and preferably not hit the shoulder on really big buck roos. Would not be a problem on wallabies. All the plastic tipped 17 projectiles are to soft for roos ,wallabies, goats and fallow. Most of the fallow I have shot have been head shot as meat recovery is the main objective for me and roast fallow shoulder is very tasty.
Regarding the wind comments out to 200m the 17 Rem is no more wind affected than a 223
