2 dogs, 2 goats and a 308

So i've been out culling some goats for a guy on his land, theyre eating out his trees, so thought id do us both a favour, get in some hunting, save his trees and get some dog tucker.

So i leashed up my 2 dogs (look like a slim black labs, got them as pups 6 yrs ago for a box of beer, deal of the century), one was keen as, nose down, straight onto the trail.
It was quite fast to get up to the goats thanks to the dog, they make it so easy to get onto the game.

Anyway, the good dog got us right up to the small mob, so i tell the dogs to wait and i go forward to let off a shot, one dogs straight off away, runs off (a wee bit gun shy)and the other cant help herself, shes glued to my leg (love the dedication to the hunt), i line up for a head shot with the 308, and bang i hit it in the shoulder at about 20-30m, odd, it runs maby 10m leaving a blood trail a blind man could follow(thanks 308) we move on again, and catch up to a nanny and a good eater, another head shot that goes low too, still drops it, shoot agian, a miss, getting pissed off, woner if i knocked the scope.
any way get the 2 goats up to the wheels, theres the other dog hidding under the car!need some doogy ear muffs.lol

as for the accuracy i'm wondering if it was the cleaning i gave the gun, as the accuracy was spot on 2 weeks ago, ive used the odd pull thru, maby twice over 10 years, and i got (finally) a propper cleaning kit and gave it what i thought was a well needed clean, spotless bore now, but it seems to be a gun that likes it dirty, but then dont we all :P

Well done FOTW. You should invest some time in zeroing your rifle though.

a good reminder - I've been out on several trips (read; 'unsuccessful walks - nothing seen') and your story is a good incentive to make sure I double-check my zero on some paper before my next big trip

Most rifles shoot better a little dirty. My 223's take around six shots after a full clean to settle back into it.

I went out on Saturday and sighted in my 308.
1st cold shot was 3.5" high and slightly left. 2nd and 3rd shots were 2" high and slightly right. Let it cool down for a while and tried another group with identical results.

Well done, any 'hunt' that brings a result is a 'good one'!......at least the dogs have been 'tried out'!...........

yup, was a good hunt, 2hrs all up (travel from home to getting back), so not too bad, i reckon any hunts good, even if u dont bag anything, just love getting out there (something i dont take for granted anymore after having a bit of long term illness).

and after 4 shots it seemed to settle a bit, ive actually never sighted it in, it shot fine when i got it years back, and ive left it at that, its been up and down the country abit too.
its an old as remmington woodsmaster semi, its a bit weighty esp with the bi-bod on it, but it soaks up the recoil that much ive never noticed it.
i think i'll go back to just oiling up the action and leave the wire brushes out of it, it seems to like inox over gun oil too.

its the 3rd goat hunt the dogs have been on, 1st the smell was so thick u could cut it with a spoon, dogs just sat there wagging tails, 2nd hunt they saw the goats and the kill, and this time everything "clicked", gotta try them on retreiving birds now, thatd save the old fella from fridgid dips getting ducks out of freezing water :omg:.lol (gotta find a pond to shoot up here 1st tho)

Yeah FOTW, i know what that 'cold water' feels like, i got a duck hunting 'possie' last year for opening day, the 'initiation' was I was the 'gun dog,' went through about 6 pairs of fukn socks..........

Ha ha, socks would have been fine, i was needing about 20 changes of undies lol.
makes u feel a bit for the dogs going in and out, i was doing a grand Eunuch empreson for weeks :XD:
