Im not sure what doc uses for their own employees but dad does a lot of contract work for them and its all 55gr Belmont or 32g 00 buckshot ground shooting or in the air but hes never done Tahr where I think they specify/provide non toxic ammunition? I think a lot of guys are using heavier 00 loads but he reckons it kills just as well and doesnt beat the crap out of you as much after a few days in the air. Interesting talking to him the other day and he said that since thermal has come in he pretty much has never used a shotgun ground shooting small game (hares, rabbits, wallabies etc) as the thermal gear has eliminated the need to flush and shoot animals.
I have a bit of 222 stuff here that was sold off as all their shooters have gone to the 223, 50gr S&B

Around here they use Hornady or Fiocchi 55gr SP. Also what they supplied (50 round packets) in limited quantities for those hunters using 223 on recent NZDA/DOC collaboration goat hunt on Molesworth Station

The naysayers have dropped away (save for the most resilient) and the heavy frangible bullets are pretty much accepted as being totally adequate by those who actually use them. And the number of converts is growing.

Speaking personally on that, I dont comment because Ive said my piece and also feel alienated from the thread now.

That’s a shame. Ive only ever seen good natured banter. You haven’t even been called a bitch.

It’s an interesting thread and it’s certainly got some legs but the simple truth is there will always be those for and against on any topic. This particular one, those of us that successfully use the caliber will continue to do so. Those that haven’t been successful using it will stick with whatever works for them.

    Holy shit.

I went out there to cut a load of firewood, and ended up in an absolute Cecil B De Mile epic involving the neighbour's cows going through fences, smashing gates and just creating carnage before camping up next to a building site and refusing to move.
Then the neighbor decided it was too much effort to recover this particular cow, and could we just shoot it?
I had no rifle, so a borrowed. 223 gets produced (fortunately I was confident of the zero), Daisy gets sent to cow heaven and I'm bleeding it with a pocket knife because the Bahco in the side by side had just been used to cut electric fencing tape and could have been used as a bike seat.....
Then I went and found a decent knife for the next stage of the comedy.
