im new to .308 and wondering what rounds i should run for reg stags at 30m to 100m. im sighted in at 100m on Winchester 308 Win Super-X 150gr Power Point rounds. does anyone have experience with these rounds on red stags? i was also looking at Hornady 308 Superformance 150gr Polymer Tip Hornady SST if anyone can give me any knowledge on the stopping power differences on these two rounds or if i should go to a heavier round for red stags.
Stags won't know the difference.
Any difference at that distance is academic.
The .308 has enough legs within 200m (and further out but lets say 200m so no one can argue) that basically any standard deer hunting factory round will do the job as long as you put the bullet through the boiler house or CNS.
Changing bullet weights or types from what you have will involve money and time, but will not achieve any tangible benefit at the hunting ranges that you have tabled.
150 grain is basically the 'industry standard', 180 grain will work too but generally have a bit more recoil.

I like speer 150 btsps: why? They shoot well in my rifle to the ranges i am comfortable with and are cheap.
I've used both and the win 150 power point is awesome as a bush hunting load. Buy three packets, sight your rifle to be bang in st 50 meters and go hunting and shoot stuff in the bush until you run out of ammo. should see you right for a couple of years. spend the rest of your money on fuel to go out hunting.
have used .308 now for the best part of 50 years - stay with 150 grain only because as long shot says 180grain will boot a bit more - dont over complicate what bullets will do comparing commercial brands - they will all do the job they were designed for - just smack your stag hard in the engine room he will die - the only time I choose carefully commercial rounds is with my .222 - some american made rounds dont work well on deer since likely they were designed for woodchucks YUK YUK the euro made i.e norma sako work better generally -so if you can compare brands for accuracy in your rifle - choose and away ya go - american made .308 150 grain will have been designed for deer -euro certainly will have also - so good to go
Bullet placement is more important than weight. Use what u got.
awesome cheers for the info boys, just wanted to make sure i was on the right path with the grain as there seams to be alot more diversity and options with .308 rounds rather than .270 witch is all ive ever used and the stag reference was just to reference larger game.

I will buck trend and say buy a box of plain winchester 180grn cup n core loads..they recoil LESS than the same in 150...dont ask me explain why as dont know..possibly because its loaded slower?? and is more of a shove than a boot..but its a real thing..and they kill awesomely,its a soft pill so mushrooms well and leaves huge blood trails from chest shot as big exit.
I would not use sst load..have said why elsewhere,others love them.
try three of the 180s on paper so know where they going...... leave scope alone so your 150grn load is still sighted in perfectly for the maybe longer shot and use the 180s stalking in bush etc...best of both worlds then.
I wouldn't use the sst as a close range load.
Would be more inclined to go to a soft point interlock and or 180gr
Haven't used 30 cal SSTs but I know that 139 7mms are very explody close up. Generally levels the beast but total jelly inside and a fair bit of unnecessary meat loss.
150gr Corelocts in my 308. Haven't tried 180gr. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Attempting to channel @ Mickey Duck 150 or 170 gr round nose cup n core at that range, hell out to 200 yds they'll have near as dammit the same trajectory as a sharp pointy flash boat tail jobby going the same speed and be better at handling shrubbery that may be in the way. 😁
put the .308back in the cupboard and take your .270.Flame throwers have got way more HP than the .308

If your guns sighted in with the 150grain power point leave it at that you. Go find yourself a stag mate. If it doesn’t go down it was probably a shit shot and 180gr wouldn’t have made a difference either.

Another vote for the 165gr SST. Superb bullet out of a 308 at moderate 2,500-2650 velocities. Or if you can get them 165gr Nosler Partitions - another superb bullet.
Same buzz, with the 30s SST, close range they fragment with minimal penetration. Interlocks, fusion in 150 have done me well imo

I went through the same thing a few years ago with what ammo to use in my 308. A guy who has represented NZ for shooting recommended Nosler 165g. It has a very good BC too. I wouldn’t use anything else now.
I had issues with the 150gr after changing from the interlock to get a bit better bc and they are sopost to be the same bullet different yip...the plastic tip makes them open a lot more violently, That combined with a relatively low sectional density ment I had multiple failures to penetrate at bush ranges and I swore off them. They were only being launched at around 2800 from memory.Quote:

My two cents. Whats more important than the projectile you chose, is where you naturally aim.
I once had a major disagreement with a guy. we both used .270 win. I used and swore by corlokts. He hated them as too hard and loved ballistic tips. My experience with BT's had been, well, Meh.
Turns out my natural aiming point tended to smash through bone. His was a bit further back. His bulet worked well for him. Mine worked well for me. Both are good it turns out.
asking 10 people on the net will give you an answer, but maybe not the one you need. Work out what you want to do and choose from there.

I never had problems and mainly used the Sako 123grain bullets....used 150 Amax to good effect when reloading.
.seen a load of deer shot with the 150gr Corelockts...cant really go wrong with the 308
.i'd stick with the 150's or just go with whatever you can get a ready supply of...
During the roar I exclusively use 180 grain Winchester soft point projectiles, I revert to my 130 TTSX after the roar. For angry stags I prefer the heavier projectile.
150gr Nosler Accubonds, end of story for me.

I used both, and a bunch of other bullets in .308. The 150gr sst is my least favorite. But that reflects my up-close-and-personal style of hunting where i want something a little tougher plus it was finicky in my rifle for accuracy. But really, no bullet is going to fail you.
