I'd heard at the start of the year that the Maori's had closed off the poled route through the river flats, the one you follow when you leave Porinui, cross the kaipo and head for the hut. Is this true and if so how are you meant to get to the hut??

Te Iringa track is the other way to get there or if you can afford it get a chopper ride in.
Considering the leg work done to get that route open it wold be a shame to see it made inaccessible due to this.
Te Iringa is a fucking long walk compared to the poled route.
Might be nice to get clarification from the owners. Who is it?
My brother in law went into the oamaru via the poled route in the summer (he wouldn't shut up about all the deer he saw on the way in). I'm pretty sure it was in Janurary this year. I'll check with him.

Yep sure is, I went up Te Iringa a couple weeks ago and it just climbs and climbs!

DOC has a new track flagged to the Oamaru hut that doesn't pass through the Tongariro Aviation block. I was in a month ago, the new track still hasn't been cut but access across the Tongariro Aviation block was still allowed.
Is it clearly marked where to park? Thinking of heading into this part of the forrest for 4 days this weekend?
Theres a Doc car park there. Huts been done up too, enjoy :)
You have to park at the start of Porinui. We found the new DOC track on the way in, I couldn't be fucked checking it out properly was already buggered so just went down to the river and walked the poled route which is still open. I have no idea why they want to close it, it makes no sense.
Sorry to be a pain beavis but are there any maps that mark the polled route and where its starts. Read somewhere that you can drive to the end of taharua road but looks like its well into poronui? also whats the deal with doc hut tokens will be heading friday night by the looks and wont have a chance to get any can you do them online yet or anything?
No worries. Follow Taharua Rd till you get to the Porinui gate (don't go through it if it's open lol)... you have to walk the rest of the way. There is a paper road going through Porinui, it in itself is a poled route. Just follow it. You will come to a gate in some scrub just above the river. This is where you leave Porinui and enter Maori land. Follow the track down hill and cross the river. You can't miss the poled route. Unless its at night and foggy... but I put some reflector stickers up when I went through for when it happens to people.Quote:
