Advice for a first Ruahine's hunt

    G'day Team,

A couple mates and i are looking at heading to the Ruahine's last weekend in April.
    We mainly hunt the Kaimais.

Looking at staying at Purity Hut, understand you have to call Richie to arrange crossing of land.

Any advice for when we get up there would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Advice for Purity.
She's a pretty hard steep climb which doesn't let up till ya get to the hut. Once there pretty short distance to the tops and there is a lot of tops hunting available from there. Walk over iron peg wooden peg. If you biv out you can see the bay at night.
You could well have snow up there at any time of the year so be prepared for that.

As for Ritchie when you call its appreciated if you are honest up front and don't bullshit him with nik names and so forth. Tell him who you are where you're from, what your intentions are and give your number.

By christ don't shoot the back of the farm/fringe country.
This is what will end up shutting access if it carries on.

You could run into some late red roars.

    Cheers

Beer and wine go along way to securing future access with Richie and Margot!
Just ask what flavour when ringing for access and don't shoot his pets!

Great views. boil the water at the hut, I got very very sick.

The farmer loves cigars and wine very chatty guy

Hunting wise i was there about 5 years ago and all deer seen were up and over the main ridge. i would plan on tenting out at the top was a tarn and usable area for a camp spot about 500m from the end of the ridge the hut is on from memory. Always planned on getting back but haven't made it yet.
I seen about 20 odd deer was there for 2 nights and about 12 hours of that i was stuck on the long drop.

Looking forward to a trip report for ya
