We have put people off writing articles/ sharing hunt stories here in the past, by seeming to be judgmental of what or how it was shot.....it's not that long ago shooting stags in velvet was sacralidge ....hinds were to be selected with careful consideration for age etc... agree with comments re the difference between neighbouring farms being big part of problem. Here in Geraldine we have large forestry blocks with access shut to all but a VERY select few.... sanctuary for wallabies and deer to hide in,the pigs also hide out in there, they get well harassed when come out. I saw mob of twenty plus deer from busy road not that long ago....a hunters welcome sign was conspicuous by its absence.

Of course, but an individuals' ethics and preferences are not constant and are influenced by group norms. I predict change.
Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.

Who would be comfortable shooting a hind who's fawn was reliant on her, but not comfortable with someone starving a dog to death?
    Overkill is still dead.

What the difference between shooting a hind with a fawn and a milky doe rabbit with young in a burrow?

    Nothing.
And I've used a similar argument when some dogooder tries raking me about killing an animal.
How do you feel when you swat a fly?
    Shuts them down quickly.

If you go rabbit shooting do you check if the rabbit is a doe in milk ? . How many 1000's of hinds were shot with fawns in the meat hunting days ? horses for courses i think . I would hate to see tons of green rain again .

This is getting a bit silly.

A lot of ammo is being deposited into some CNI hills from helicopters on private farm/station contracts, dealing to thousands of deer. It's been alluded to in this thread already but for those unaware of this, the numbers are literally unbelievable. As in if you discuss it them, they will not believe you. This can be socially awkward. However, there is no room for hand wringing, the contractors are just getting on with it. Shit happens. We all live here in a country that willfully poisons all its hard to get to pests; shooting is merciful, irrespective of the inevitable collateral victims, relatively speaking.

The dark irony in all of this is that many of the tweeters and Greenies and other generally anti- feral ungulate types are also very keen to be seen as pro animal rights, donating to all manner of animal rights causes. The awkward truth of what it takes to control large ungulate mammals in our environment will be far too uncomfortable for them to agree to hear, so I expect it to be swept under the carpet.

This is why I suggested... the jump in style live capture enclosures,, manageable by owners/managers, no pest controllers, no helicopters, no regional council, no AHB.
Just a well positioned enclosure, the deer/goats will do the rest themselves, just harvest or cull as required. 100% tax deductible.
Plus added bonus.. could rent out shearing quarters to the ever increasing numbers of youtuber product reviewers to shoot deer in enclosure. Extra income.

The live capture thing does happen. Some years ago a Station down here acquired a new block of 200 Ha near Liethen Bush. It was ring fenced at deer height and just on 1000 deer were shot off it with a chopper. Jump ins etc were installed and less than a year later another nearly 1000 deer were taken out.

My ancestors didn't climb to top of food chain in order to eat carrots. Doesn't matter if you subscribe to evolutionism or to creationism either way,we eat the animals,we top of food chain.....we do however have scruples, morals and w conscious.....so we ,at end of day,can but do our very best to be as humane as possible.

My take is reading between the lines of the original article the hype is all about getting permissions to use Brodifacoum. Note the classic dropping into the article of "We don't like to use"....But. Also nothing at all in the article about the massive loss of Farmland to Carbon Forest conversions creating the perfect habitat for breeding/animal number increases on a huge scale. Is access allowed into these Private Forests owned by Corporates.

You do realise that the country’s largest “carbon farmer” has a significant pest control programme in place that removes a lot of animals yearly

The Health and Safety Act changed a few years back and it terrified farmers, they were talking about it for months on rural radio stations for example.

Basically a farmer is more comfortable with a deer pinching some turnips vs a guest rolling a quad bike or tripping and breaking his leg etc.

So until the law loosens up on that they're not letting anyone in except commercial cullers with their own health and safety plans. Especially mature forestry owners where deer are basically beneficial (free law mowing of lanes).

The law doesn't really apply to recreational activity though, just risks from work activity? Ie not natural features, hunting itself and so on

Didn't but it does now especially if there is some hazard on the farm that isn't 100% idiot proof. A lot of duck shooters lost access to their pond etc over it
